I bought the Caddy engine. I am not sure what I am going to do with it yet. I am a big Cadillac fan and enjoy collecting parts and engines. I like to build one shop car every 1-2 years, I build it, enjoy it then sell it. I was thinking that I might build a 29 roadster on 32 rails and use the caddy motor. Jimmy White P.s. Nice work on the Caddy by Mcphail, Jeff Myers and group. You guys kicked some serious ***... P.s.s. Thanks Dennis for hooking a brother up with that sweet caddy motor...
Awesome. Hated the dips on the doors, they didn't look right in the drawing (I preferred the straight edge) and looked worse on the car. But everything else came out really nice, the stance was great, I would have done something different with the paint. And I know Jimmy is going to do something cool with the Cad (331?). I hope the valve covers didn't get trashed when the cherry picker flipped... Great job guys. Y'all are my heros..
Hopefully the Florida smoothies and yellow walls are temporary- but it was AWESOME to see an actual custom being built with no drama and clashing egos on TV. I would have cut up a four-door if I was building it- that car actually looked REALLY clean and totally complete- but so have some of the other cars sacrificed like the '29 Sedan.
It was a good show and a lot got done in a week. Who got the car in bare steel, and how much mud and time went into it before the primer went on?
the scallops were awful (sorry if i hurt anyone in particular's feelings), they clashed with every line of the car. i don't mind the flat paint, but like dennis pointed out, there's probly lotsa grinder marks to cover up. the DCS (Dread Chrome Smoothy) cheapened the whole look of the car as well. good thing i'm so ****in' smart and talented, it would have turned perfectly if i had been involved...
My favorite part was watching JJ fumble around trying to build a front suspension. Must-II on a car this heavy???? I'll bet it drives like a dump truck with flat tires. Speaking of tires, that shot of it driving with those skinny *** tires and the over-wide tread, i thought any minuite we were going to see it hopping. You can't screw with widening crossmembers and not also widening the rack (all piviot angles must be in line) Can you say "BUMPSTEER" JJ? Oh well, If that auction character says it will bring 100+K sell it to him for 80K fast
Ok. I have read alot of peoples reviews on this show and it is my turn! Not alot of us on the HAMB liked the car? Isn't "KUSTOMS" supposed to be different and creative and not try and look like others cars? Then ya have the likes and talent of all of those that partaked in the build. I think it came out great and stands out like it is suppose to. Hats off to the fellow HAMB'rs that worked on it.....Mc Phail and Jimmy W. Good to see the talent and likes of HAMB'rs on more shows like this and not guys getting all pissed off and quitting ala Coddington'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KNUX!
Funny. I thought he sounded like Peter Brady too when I met him at the HAMB BBQ!! Rob, ya gonna be at 'Paso this year?
I am in the same scenario too. Just going to go up that day and roll back at night. I have never been and moving to Whittier the same weekend too!!!!!!! I hope to see ya there!!!!!!!!!! KNUX!
Another thing I like about this show was that Derosa Sr. chose not to partake of the drama and said "Son, this is not the time or the place."
It was an awesome show. However the 54 was a waaaaayyyy cooler car than that Cad. I guess cool is relative but that Caddy seemed like a bunch of afterthoughts to me. People who design vastly different style customs shouldn't collaberate until there's a clear consensus of the end result. I also about spit out my dinner when that old boy said he was "shrinking the metal" Directly after he said that they showed him bashing a piece of relief-cut sheet metal down into a corner with a flat body hammer. Then he says "perfect". LMAO! Boys if that's master craftsmanship I'm the Prime Minister of Japan. Yeah, I admit I didn't know who that cat was. I guess he's a famous name in the custom world. If that's how he really builds cars in his normal realm I am seriously unimpressed.
The last part giving it an auction price was stupid. No way it was worth what they said (maybe finished in real paint). Only thing I did not like about the car was the dip in the top of the doors and the shape of the roof could have been more flowing... The episode was good but the car was not even close to being a driver. the motor was mocked in, no wiring,,, yet they got the tools and it was not driveable. would like to see more of the customs being built.
I agree that the car wasn't done, but I think Jesse wouldn't have the heart to destroy something like that. As for the auction estimate, you never know, the fact it was a tv car with such big names, I bet there's someone out there that would pay. I was bumbed at how conservative the section and chop was. I was really hoping to see more exageration--"cartoony" like jesse kept saying in the begining. Still cool and I would have loved to be a part of it...
I loved the show, but would agree that it wasn't done at the end of the show.If that was okay, then why did they crush that *****in Anglia? The first show with the chopped Chevy,I think, was better. Also,i've never heard of a 100,000/150,000 car that was in primer.Would have liked to see what the inside looked like, and without the top.I'm sure the producers had a lot to do with the way the show turned out.I heard Jesse has a hard time with them.I like the ***-dragger look, but think it would've been *****in to see it laying frame.Does anyone know what happened to the car?
You can log on to Discovery Channel .com, and get the show on tape,if it is avaible yet.Thats how I got the first show, with the Chopped Chevy.
not me i was doin a house call at 50chevys last night have to watch the repeat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that car would have been way cooler without the door dips and if they would or could have used the cad mill. atleast we all know jimmy white will do something good with it. just like every car jesse james owns it got a jegs crate motor. lame. they could ahve atleast done 5 minutes of lead slinging with hines. hell i would have been fine with 5 hours. JUNIOR
First, let me say that I agree that the bit with him hammering in the piece of metal was lame. I almost have to believe that they were playing around. Having said that, please go to this URL and read about this "old" man. http://www.darrylstarbird.com/starbird.htm His contributions to the hobby, sport, tradition or what ever you want to cal it are truly legendary. Nuff said.
When i was at the W.C. No Love Party Pete Finland told me that the chopped 54 chevy was gonna be auctioned at barret jackson. Has anyone seen or heard if it sold???
I would have liked to have seen what Jesse finally did with the front suspension. The way he set it up, it would have never worked. The final product they showed was a stock mustang II crossmember with bent tubing going out to the frame rails that where a good distance from the crossmember. So where would you mount the upper a arms and did they lengthen the lower a arms. It kind looked like Jesse had no clue what he was doin as the master fabricator. Plus how was any of the sheetmetal work that they were doing anything to brag about. I would be ashamed to be on national TV with all the great equipment in that shop like an eckold craftformer or the english wheel. That eckold would have made those easy panels in minutes. I know the wheel takes more time but man it must take a quite bit of time to weld up those relief cuts and grind. I thought the idea of the show was cool but the quality and end result was not anything to brag about. don't mean to step on toes but my 2 cents spend it how you will.
Is it just me, or when they have old timers on,(and by old timers, I don't mean just one's age) the build seems to go real smooth, with no ********? To have guys that have every right to be arrogant with their accomplishments be humble and say how it was an honor to work with everyone. well that says alot about one's character, doesn't it?
Dude, take it easy and think about it for a minute.. Remember it is a T.V. Show!!! I agree there was some stuff I thought was kind of peculiar, The front end set-up, and then the relief cuts in the formed piece. But I realized it is T.V.. I dont think the Eckold is in the Monster Garage shop it is in the main shop. Most of the work you see on Monster Garage is not really anything to brag about, They are rushing to get it done in a week. As a shop owner you should know once stuff starts getting rushed things get overlooked and details are lost. That is why I always try to never rush stuff, the results are always less then satisfactory. Not trying to step on your toes just maybe giving a different perspective. Jimmy white P.s. I have heard more then once, what you are doing will never work, or that thing is going to have the worst bump-steer, why are you doing it like that? And in the end the car went down the road arrow straight with no drivability problems.
I think it has to do with respect. Respect for our elders and respect for the legends of the hobby. May we never lose that. Remember that Hines is 86, Derosa is in his eighties, and the younger Starbird is in his sixties. Jesse said it best when he sat down in the 54 build and watched Hines sling lead, didn't say a word, just watched. We owe it to these gentleman to respect their efforts and absorb their work ethics. They don't have to act tough, or posture, they let their work speak for them.
Beautiful cars there. I'm not saying the guy isn't a living legend. He very well may be. I'm just saying if that's how he really builds cars then he's no craftsman, he's just a guy with cool vision and ambition. Maybe they WERE screwing around but I'd be embarr***ed if I did work like that.... let alone if it was being filmed.
I agree that they are under dead line and that they are rushed but I'm not so sure that the work they showed was any different then what maybe you do normally. i would like to think I do nice work and I would never do work like that for any reason. i could short cut my work for speed and little more bondo. But at some point there is only so much I can do and be proud of.
