If you ever want to repaint it watch what you use to take the paint off,those are not made from the usual plastic and I think I ruined one soaking it in brake fluid.

 

Use Westleys Bleech White.Strips the paint wuthiut harming the plastic.Soak it in Dawn fir an hour after the paint is stripped and hold it under the sink while rinsing it in cool water.

 

Castrol Super Clean does a nice job of stripping paint off a car body also... Use latex gloves when handling those parts when rinsing with water....

 

Just put the finishing touches on this today.

Remember the Revell/Amt series from 1955 and 1956

I don't remember those because I started building in 1960, with the '60 Ford Hardtop.

Thanks, I started building in 58 when the first AMT 1/25 scale customizing kits came out, I was 7 years old. I spent almost every penny I could come up with on model cars and hot rod magazines. In grade school I wheeled and dealed with my buddies for models as they were not that serious about them as I was. I once got in a hell of a fight with a neighbor kid that was blowing up a AMT 59 Pontiac with fire crackers! The little Revell/Amt cars I have collected and re-build over the years. I have spent unknown hours and a bunch of money over the years "playing" with model cars but I still enjoy it. In the winter when It is too cold to work on my real cars I hold up in my warn hobby room and turn on my 50's and 60's tunes and tinker as long as my eyes and back holds out. Like a wise man once said "You have to grow old, but you don't have to grow up!"

Buckeye, where did that 58 Special model come from? I’ve looked for a 58 kit but can’t find anyone that makes one.

 

It isn't a Special, it is an original AMT 58 Roadmaster 3in1 kit. I see an example on eBay once in a while, be prepared to spend some bucks if you want one.

 

I am building a WW1 German Eindekker from scratch.Found the plabs online and took it to Kinkos and had the plans blown up 200 percent.Cutting the parts out of 1/16" basswood.

I used Lego plates and bricks as an assembly fixture to set the dihederal.

 

This is what I'm working on. AMT 49 Merc with parts from the newer Revell 49 merc. The lighter blue is the final color. The darker blue was the first color I tried and hated. Mods: flush mount skirts, nosed, decked, Desoto grille, bumper guard tail lights shaved door handles.

 

I thought the Revell kit was cool when it came out but there are so many issues with it that I went back to the AMT kit myself as well. AMT's big limitation is the tub interior. Not easy or simple to modify the rear seats for a proper custom interior, like you can their '56 and '57 Fords. Same problem with their '58 Impala; cool custom front seats, but you're stuck with the stock seats if you're not capable of modifications.

 

The proportions are awful in the new Revell kit. To me, proportions of a kit need to be right. The AMT kit is way better. However, the Revell kit has great Kustom parts to scavenge for other kits.

 

Yep; seems like they followed computer models of measurements too strictly and lost the "look". Besides, you can't pose the steering on the Revell kit, regardless of how out-of-scale and klunky the AMT parts for that are. AMT gets blasted by "serious" builders as "low quality, inaccurate" stuff because they sold kits with "flat pan" chassis and metal axles... maybe because the original market segment was KIDS! I still love AMT kits over almost anything else. They almost always LOOK right.

 

I got turned off on the Revell kits when I was a kid. They were to hard for a fumble fingered little kid to work with. Back then I just used them for some of the parts to use on my AMT kits. Some of the new Revell kits are not too bad but AMT models are still my favorites, I just can not (or will not!) pay the Hobby Lobby prices. I know prices are not what they were in the 50's and 60's but $25.00 for a model car kit? I would rather put those bucks in one of my real car projects. I still have fun rebuilding some of my original models from back in the good old days!

 

I love AMT and Monogram the best, but it depends on the kit. The AMT 33-34 Ford sedans were pretty off in proportions too. The monogram 34 Ford and then later ZZ top 33 coupe was better. Here's an unchopped Monogram 34 3 window I built.

 

The AMT 40 Fords are great, and I've built a ton of them, Coupes, sedans and sedan deliverys. But the Revell 40 coupe and convertible that came out about 10-15 years ago are pretty darn nice. Here are versions of the Revell 40 coupe and convertible I built.

 

Try as I might, I just can't get the Revell '40 kits to come out right. I have better luck with the Lindberg clone of the ancient AMT kit!

 

BuckeyeBuicks, I live by a town of 110,000 people or so and the ONLY place to buy from is Hobby Lobby! Used to be couple other hobby stores around, but they are long gone. Now it's 80 mile round trip to next city to find a "detacated" hobby store. HL does have a 40% off coupon that I lay on them when I do buy. Nuff rant ... by the way, really nice models you guys are build in !!
