I think it will be on the stands July 11th. I guess he talks about Black Kat Customs, among other stuff.

So it's a staged pic, so what? Magazines stage pics, that's what they do. It's called a photoshoot. At least it's not a pic of somebody using a torque wrench on a carb or something. Every time I've taken pictures of a girl with a car with an exposed motor they grab the biggest wrench they can find, point it at something on the motor and smile pretty.

  10. I guess you had to be there..........

I don't get why everyone's bashing Ness. If it weren't for high profile guys like him, bitchin magazines wouldn't be in print and builders like Cole Foster wouldn't be doing what he does best.

WTF has he done for hot rodding?

    Musician...yes

    Hot rod lover...yes

The rub is that he's a rock star who doesn't necessarily work on his own shit posing as if he does. His music is pretty cool, but he's a just a goofy character who takes himself a little too seriously and that might open him up for a ribbing. Yes, I have met him several times. In the "punk" days in OC and in the past few years. Nice enough guy in person, who is definitely a car enthusiast.

I live in a house but I wouldn't pose for a picture that made it look like I'd built it. That's all I'm sayin'.

Come on- without him how cool would it be to own a black primed 4-door Valiant with red sprayed rims? You know Mullets, Camaros and acid wash jeans couldn't stay in style forever! Reminds me of the full Rockabilly couple with a kid in the same grade school as mine. He's got the pomp, sideburns, Dickies coat, mega cuffed jeans and Engineer boots- she's got the bleached out Bettie-do with the quarter inch bangs and tries to look "dainty" despite physical limitations. I thought by the looks of it they were into hots rods for some reason- just got a glazed look when I asked, and they drove away in their brand new Jaguar.

You're right. Not much is cooler than 6 rockabilly dudes hopping out of that '67 Valiant in the parking lot to go into a show and make fun of other people's actual hot rods.

Not to highjack the thread but I saw that issue of Hot Rod Deluxe for sale for like $50.00, has any one else seen that? If so my issue is going on ebay or Im trading it for parts, and let Mike Ness do what ever the hell he wants to do, I know his music has kept me entertained for like 15 years now, regardless of how you might feel about some of his audience.

I think what he ment was that High profile Celebs, Bands, ect. that bring a lot of attention to the "culture" also bring with them some rich people who want a good lookin car but lack the means to do it themselves.

That being said, I think that they should just be left alone. I dont know how into it Mike Ness is. I dont know his mechanical inclination. Id just as soon not talk about him at all because SD is getting old in my opinion.

awww crap. publicity photos gone awry-news at eight.
at least the guy knows where the damn thing goes. and yeah, the cute girl/big wrench thing has been done, but for that matter, so has the 'ol devil head.

this is playing out like one of those "I'm more punk than you" conversations that make me wanna bonk peoples heads together like coconuts.
gay.go work on your (or someone elses) car.

I always believed that the criticism came because he is torqueing a rocker arm, but at second look he could have it on a head bolt.

I hear in the magazine coming out Ness is on the phone ordering a water pump for a rat rod VW bug!!!

I could really care less about the whole kustom culture deal. I just like cars. All the rest is a bunch of drama and people playing dress-up as far as I'm concerned.

It's the same reason prices have become completely ridiculous. If I had my choice, traditional hot rods and customs would remain an obscure oddity in the car world. Why? stuff would be cheap, and our style of cars would be kind of "original" (as opposed to what every guy watching discovery channel now covets). Not that I'm trying to play the "old school before it was cool" guy, because I'm not that guy. I just know that the more exposure we get, the more expensive cars and parts seem to become, and that kinda sucks.

Hahahahaha! This thread cracks me up! Im not sure about the "Black Cat Customs (Kustoms?) shop as well? Have they built anything worthy of any magazine coverage? Are they a transmission shop with a custom car logo on the outside of the shop? I dig his music but im too deep into Hop-ups and Kustoms to get swept up into the latest thing.....

  29. Alright fellas, here's the rub. It took me a while to get this, but not everyone who dresses "old skool," or "rockabilly," of whatever people want to call it dress that way to look like a hot rodder. When it comes to looking like a greaser, some people are really into the music and that's why they choose to look like they do, or they are into the art, or whatever. Just because alot of us do it because we are into hot rods doesn't mean that's why everybody does it. Don't get me wrong, I understand that posing or making like you work on your car if you don't is about as uncool as it gets, but I have that issue with that picture in question and he says he took a week off of work to chop it with friends and talks about all the help he got and how much respect he has for the people who do it. What else do you want?

I think what people forget is Mike Ness is a car enthusiast. That picture was probably staged by the photographer, The only thing Mike Ness is guilty of Is not saying "that might be a stupid picture". He is a pretty nice Guy, he comes by my shop once in awhile, and I have been by his. He has alot of equipment, and a guy that works for him that is plenty capable. His shop is fantastic and he has some really cool cars their. In my presence he has never passed himself off as a "builder". He just acts like a regular guy that is into cars. As far as the music is concerned I have always liked Social Distortion, from their punk days to now. They are not one of my favorites, but I think they are O.K. I recently watched the movie Another State of Mind, with Social Distortion and Youth Brigade, After seeing that it gave me a whole new appreciation for S.D. and Mike Ness. I guess he is probably an easy target, Its easy to say he is a poser, but in reality he isnt, he is just a dude that is into cars. As far as the Kustom Kuture (Car Scene). I think the Lonely Kings and Mike Ness helped start it off in southern California. I can remember seeing those guys around and they always had some pretty neat cars. This was way before the red rim black primered 63 four door Valiant days. Sorry if this doesnt make any sense, I guess I am just trying to shed some light on him and the situation. Also I had to re-Dykem my chassis table today so I think I am still somewhat high from that.
