Got a free running small block and trans from my dad. The only hitch is it came with an '84 chevy van attached. My question is: what's the best way to get it from the belly of the beast? Do I remove remove the grill and go thru the front or do I go from the inside? I know this is a dumb question but I'm just trying to go the easiest way. Thanks- stick
Best way is to say, "Open Wide" and ****** it out through the front teeth. Tryi'n to go from the inside out wuold get pretty ugly. Justice
I dont know vans that well.....but if it has the dog house its going to be a *****....to bad you cant just lift everything around the engine....good luck man Owen
See if you can get a hold of a Motors or Chilton book and see what they say on the best way to take it out
its gonna be easiest to come out the front. I just did a dodge van, and that came out the front, wasnt real horrible, but it was harder than a car or truck
I did a 460 in a ford van and that had to come out the front, you probably need to pull the carb or the whole intake and chain of across the heads, having the dog house to get at the bellhousing bolts the trans will damn near fall out of the thing if you want to split them or just go for broke and start ripping, watch out for the starter to hit the motor mount on the way forward, good luck
I don't know fro sure about the full size van but when i get ready to strip my Astro Van for it's drive train I'm just going to unbolt the subframe and lift the body off of everything. You s****ping the body? Just "remove it"
The conventional way is out the front, but when I want to impress the neighbors, I dump it on its side and hack it out with a torch. It flops out easy that way, just make sure you drain the fluids first. Wouldnt want to harm the environment.. If youre gonna trash it have fun with it first..
out the front if i was gonna, cut out all the **** in the front that is in the way(if you dont care about it) like the bottom of the core suport so you dont have to lift it as hi.
just a idea, put the front of the van on some ramps, cut the engine /****** out drop it and cut the bumper/ grill out and push the van back. Would that work?
I did the same thing on a '89 van a while back...just unbolt the engine/trans, also you need to unbolt the engine mount stands from the frame. Then torch out everthing that is in the way and bring it out the front...if the van is to be saved the front radiator/core support will need to be removed....I like the blue wrench myself.... Brian
Love the torch idea but knowing me I'd probably set all that **** carpeting aflame. Thanks for the info y'all.-stick
