ChromeRat and his Knobs!!!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by paulatxntric, May 16, 2006.

  1. Just received 2 shifter knobs from ChromeRat after convoluted payment system involving another HAMBer (cheers Bud) that resulted after paypal decided to put a payment limit on my "verified" unlimited account (I now only have 70c left to spend!!).......

    Back to the point...........

Shifter knobs.......fu*kin awsome......just buy some because you can...... Not so much accessories as ART!
I am gona have to fight the wife for them (OK not a problem as a bit of grappleing on the sofa always goes down well) Shes put them on the mantlepiece over the fireplace as ornaments!!!
They really are fu*kin awsome. Respect to ya Josh

glad ya like them, fellas! been hard at work since the last pour. it's taken a little longer than i had expected to get into this next run of skulls. lots of clean up work to do and things popping up here and there to contend with. had to help on the farm for a few weekends and etc. good news is that school is almost out for me, and i'll have all day to work on everybody's shifter knobs instead of waiting until after work to get things done!

anyways, here's a pic of some of these things in wax. i do them 16 to a tree, have one more "tree" to put together, then i'll spend an evening or two adding vents to eliminate air pockets that would prevent them from filling out. first in line are pilots 34-49, next are the WWI germans (the detail on their spiked helmets is killer), after that are pilots 17-33 (#28 was done seperately a while back) next are regular skulls 81-96 and last in line so far are WWI doughboys/tommies/ANZACS depending on who wants one. these WWI dougboys are cool, helmet at a rake and i added a stainless steel piece that will be a cigarette bonded into the casting once metal is poured.

as far as pics of the current stuff goes, there's some on this link:

    thanks fellas!

  7. Just let me know when #32 in the pilot & bunga-bunga are done.

I want a doughboy & German too but don't need to spend $200 on shift knobs at once. Any idea how many of them you'll do? I need to wait, but don't want to miss 'em.

i'm going to cast 16 of each of the WWI guys right now, but haven't decided what it will be an edition of or anything, so if you need to wait it's not like you're gonna miss the train!

along the lines of the WWI german... i bought a linerless silver-painted WWI german helmet, M1916 style, looks like the WWII style as opposed to the spiked helmets, which are too damned expensive. ebay score, arrived today and i looked it over really close, the silver paint, applied by the vet that took it home or by the defunct VFW where it was displayed, was scratched and chipped, and i could see the original paint underneath. dark gray, olive green, rust red and tan. it was hand painted in camouflage in WWI, i think by the german soldier that owned it. as i understand it, camo was a field applied thing. i've been sanding the silver off of it to expose the pattern beneath and will recondition it using the same pattern and colors, and will leave the original paint underneath as it's impossible to get the silver off and leave the camo.

funny a WWII tanker helmet should be mentioned, i sketched one at school last week, so i'll probably turn one of those out this summer. always wanted one of those helmets, too...

you bet, man. gonna do some cleanup work on the waxes of the firemen tonight.

kinda have mixed feelings about doing a WWII german helmet. as into WWII as i am, nazi stuff kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth. this WWI helmet blew my mind tonight. i uncovered the whole original handpainted camo pattern and found a handpainted iron cross on the very top of the helmet. wonder whatever happened to that poor bastard...

yeah harrison, that's pretty much what i'm talkin about. i think moon sells a german WWII helmet knob. i've seen too many swastikas scrawled on desks at schools and talked to too many vets to want to do one of them. my feelings toward nazis are pretty much the same as the blues brothers'...

I've got an original series and a "Death by Booga-Booga' knob. What a piece of art! I've already got my 3rd on order! Trying for a full set. If I can afford it.

Josh, better put me down for a kaiser head too. Jeff and I are in a contest to see who can collect the most stuff and I have a looong way to go to catch him. You should see his collection of skulls!!! It rivals the biggest graveyard in North America!
