A few of us making the trek from NSRA Kalamazoo to NSRA Burlington Vt. . Looking for suggestions on what to see as we travel across New York before we catch the ferry at Port Kent to Burlington.
Great museum in Buffalo then head downtown to the birthplace of the chicken wing. http://www.pierce-arrow.com/ https://www.anchorbar.com/buffalo
If you're coming from the south, why not take 87 north, switch to 7 and cross at Port Henry, skipping the ferry? Or, personally, I'd take the Canadien route, drive north of Lake Ontario, turn right at Montreal and take I89 south to Burlington. The ferry looks like it takes an hour plus, depending on what time you get to the dock, then costs $30 for your vehicle plus extra for p***engers. Unless, of course, you like ferries (which I do) but I don't care for thunderstorms out on the lakes, which you can't discount. There's a great ferry across the Susquehanna at Millersburg. Old "tug" and a 3 car barge that only crosses if the river level is just right. If the ferry is on the opposite shore, there's an old door in a frame that you open and then, at that signal, they'll come across.
Go through New York State's Adirondack Park to see the lakes and mountains. From Utica, N.Y., go north on rte 12 to Alder Creek then turn right (east) towards Old Forge on rte 28. You'll p*** White Lake, the Fulton Chain of Lakes, Raquette Lake, to Blue Mountain Lake. Then turn north on rte 30 and p*** Long Lake and Tupper Lake. After Tupper Lake turn right on route 3 and continue to Saranac Lake where you turn right to continue to Lake Placid. From Lake Placid, navigate to Es*** on Lake Champlain. Not sure of route numbers. Take the ferry from Es*** to Charlotte, VT. then north to Burlington. I've made this trip numerous times from my summer home in the Old Forge area in my '37. Easy driving and very scenic. There is an excellent Adirondack museum in Blue Mountain Lake where you could easily spend a day. It's called the Adirondack Experience. Check their web site.
Our Son lives in the Killington/Pico Vermont ski area. We coincide our visit with the NSRA event in Burlington. Its just about peak season for viewing the magnificent foliage and looking at old cars without the oppressive heat. Gary
One more you might consider also is the Finger Lakes area. Watkins Glen, Wineries, Corning gl*** and the Glen Curtis museum. I don't know if you would have the time to see them all but you wouldn't regret it if you did. Safe trip. Pat
Several years ago my wife & I drove our woodie (42 Mercury) to the Woodie Nationals in Stowe, VT. We entered Canada via the tunnel at Detroit, then used back roads to cross back into the states at Niagara Falls. Surprising to see tobacco being grown on the north side of Lake Erie. Really enjoyed the falls. We highballed the interstates acoss NY then two laned it in Vermont. There are many neat stops along the way. Maybe Google your route for highlites. The way back took us into New Hampshire, then down to Mystic, CT to visit the sailing ships, check out the ocean & then interstates to home. It was a good week.
absolutely agree with this route, if you have the time a stop in Lake Placid is a must,The crowds will be gone, cooler temps, take in the town and all it offers. Do not miss the Olympic experience of the 1934 and 1980 winter games. The ride to the top of the 90 meter ski tower and the view down are breathtaking, take a Bobsled ride or take the gondola to the top of Whiteface Mt. It's also a great place to finish the day at as tons of hotels restaurants etc. Sleep well in the cool and get an early start for the ferry or the new bridge at Crown Pt. You will find NY roads to be smooth as gl*** for the most part 180 degrees from Michigan roads. [ I know as my daughter lived there for awhile] Google Lake placid for info, get a AAA map, you will not be disappointed. I guess I sound like a travel agent but we Vacation there every year and love it. In fact I'm heading up there labor day weekend for the 36th annual Olympic car show, wouldn't miss it. Ralphie
Thanks to all that responded,I now have plenty of ideas to present to the others at our pre trip meeting. Looking forward to the 2 lanes from Utica up to Burlington, will see how the vote goes to cross on the ferry or Port Henry. There will be time on our return trip to explore more of the Adirondacks as we make our way home, possibly on US route 6 through Pennsylvania or ??
We drove Route 6 in two sections: ****ord to Wellsboro last fall and Wellsboro to Erie this spring. ****ord and Wellsboro are really neat towns-make sure you hit the Gifford Pinchot "house" in ****ord. The Tunkhannock Viaduct and the Kinzua Skywalk are true 19th century engineering marvels. There is a Route 66 ***ociation in PA which can send you lots of info. The Corning Gl*** Museum is not too much out of the way and is just amazing. If your traveling south in Vermont, I think a stop at Hemming's in Bennington is in order and they have a nice little, free museum there.
Several years ago three couples of us drove our hot rods from Tulsa to Kalamazoo then up into Canada so we could see the falls from their side, then to Burlington. Was a truly great trip thru great county. One town we were in was Shelbyville [?] VT. The round barn museum there was certainly a highlight.
Worthy of 'net surfing for details on how these might interest and fit your group's travel plans : Saratoga Auto Museum and the nearby Saratoga Battlefield (roads through the site for self guided tours) Bennington Monument close to Hemmings and just across the border in NY the Bennington Battlefield (nice spot for a picnic) Fort Ticonderoga and the nearby neat little cable ferry to Shoreham VT Ausable Chasm on the NY side near the ferry to Burlington Shelburne Museum and Shelburne Farm near Bulintonton Been a few years for some but I have visited and enjoyed all of them at various times with the exception of Shelburne Museum (never been yet). Hit 'em all and you'll never get to Burlington or back home, enough for several different yearly trips to Burlington. Up on side of the lake and back the other? All the best for safe and enjoyable travels, Ed
Thirds on Letchworth park and then cross New York On 5 and 20 through the Finger lakes. A neat place in Canandaigua is the Miami Motel very nice people in a really nice setting. Take time an go around the lakes the long way, get g**** pies in Naples stop in Hammondsport at the Glenn Curtis Museum, there's a lot to see along that route and if you get pressed for time the thruway isn't that far away
