Well now, I finally made it there about 11:30 this morning. Was an interesting trip. I left home about 8:15 for what mapquest said was a two hour trip. Just after I got on I43 the hood came up on my 39, at about 70mph, it slammed back against the windshield, then opened up. I got er wahed down and undid the two bolts still holding it on and through it in the trunk. As I was removing the bolts, I noticed antifreeze spitting out the over flow.(no catch can, or even an over flow hose. oops) The wife and I walked back a few hundred yards and managed to find the chrome strip that had flown off. That was exciting. About 20 miles up 39 we stopped at the rest area, where it spit up a little more antifreeze. I had nothing to put water in to even try to refill the rad, but the guage said it wasn't too hot, so we pressed on. When we made the turn onto 164 to go north through wauksha it spit up a little every stoplight for the first 2 miles, then it quit. I can tell you that from an outsider, the streets in wauksha are poorly marked. Add to that all we had was the printed directions from mapquest and their ****ty little mapquest map. Needless to say, we did a nice tour of wauksha city limits. The first gas station we stoped at the guy didn't even know where the fairgrounds was at! After another tour we stopped at the second gas station and got very good directions, until we got to where the road was closed.... After a few turns we saw a couple show cars and followed them in. I was after some trim clips, some seat belts, and maybe some weather stripping. I found the clip space, but they didn't have what I needed. The only seat belts I found was the wrong color, and the guy with the weather stripping didn't have a listing for a 39 plymouth. He listed a 40 and a 38, but nothing for a 39. Of course both those were different. He had some genaric stuff he was sure would work for only 39.99. He still has it. About 12:45 we stopped for lunch, warm pop, cold cheseeburger and cold braut. mmmmmm. We walked back to the car to sit and enjoy (?) our food. I took the two botles up to the can and filled them with water to put in the rad. We moved the car closer when we had to refill the bottles. Took 3 more 20oz botles of water to reach an acceptable level. The only redeaming thing about the whole ordeal was the guy in the 70s Ford convert where we stopped when we refilled the water. He was nice enough to insist we take his wi map so we could find our way back to I43. Wished I could say everything went well from there... On the way home the wife decided we should stop in Rockford for something to eat. That was good, but when we came back out to the car, a twist of the key resulted in nothing happening. Got out the trusty test light and found a bad connection on the positive battery cables (one of those quick connections became disconnected just enough.) After we made the connection it fired right up and away we went, for about 4 blocks. The car started backfiring and was discharging real bad. Pulled off into a parking lot to discover (I mean besides the fact that the exhaust was now real hot) that the nut on the battery cable was almost falling off. After tightening it back up we were on the road again. We got home about 6:30. On the bright side, this was the first real trip out of town at speed. Other then a few scratches in the windshield that may buff out, and finding a few bolts that were not tightened, it wasn't a real bad experance. Over all we got about 13.4 mpg, not as good as I was hoping for, but there are a few issues to work through. At least now I know what I need to do, like make sure all the nuts and bolts are tight. The swap meet was more about going for that long interstate speed trial run then it was about buying things, if we would have scored some parts, that would have been a bonus. Too bad I missed the greet n meet, but that was about the time I was picking up pieces of my car off I 43. Gene
