[IMG] That may be a first on the HAMB, not too many of those machines out there. Bob

  2. Ran into an issue that took us a little bit of time to figure out. First was the timing cover. As you can see in the picture the groove for the rope seal as crooked. So I grabbed an extra timing cover off the shelf and it looks good. Attach the timing cover and the pan I noticed a little bit of an issue at the crank snout. The timing cover is riding on the crank snout and the oil pan rope seal doesn't even touch the crank. 20180923_110352.jpeg 20180914_201548.jpeg 20180914_201649.jpeg

  3. So we decided to fix would be using a modern seal. First we made a puck from aluminum. We attached it to the timing cover has this would give us reference of the crank position in the off-centered hole. We also drilled some pilot/guide holes into the timing cover before pulling it back off the engine. This was to ensure exact fitment when putting it all back together. Attached the pan to the mill, added a right angle drive attachment, and from the back side bored a perfect circle for the modern seal. There was more than that to do, but that was the quick and dirty version. 20180923_132505.jpeg 20180923_161756.jpeg 20180923_170841.jpeg 20180923_173141.jpeg 20180923_190725.jpeg 20180923_192515.jpeg 20180923_195936.jpeg 20180923_195940.jpeg 20180923_200225.jpeg

  7. That's a great solution, but I'm wondering, if the cover rides on the crank, and the pan rope doesn't reach the crank, it looks like the crank is riding too high in the block. Do the timing gears mesh correctly?

  8. Yes on the mesh. We had checked that a few times. We even adjusted the alternator to mesh correctly. I don't have the means to pour babbitt and was done by someone else. Whoever line board the babbitt obviously didn't line bore it properly. In this case they were high (or low depending how you want to look at it) in the block, thus having the crank high in the block.

  9. Nothing fancy. Buddy test fitted the hogshead and made a mag post cover and oil dam. IMG958934.jpeg IMG958936_01.jpeg IMG958940_01.jpeg IMG958941_01.jpeg IMG958942_01.jpeg

Just getting into Model Ts. What are you using for "oil slingers" without the magnets?

  11. The flywheel. My buddy runs nothing but the flywheel and he has thousands of miles on his T. The mag post was removed while running and the amount of splash that came through proved enough that nothing else was needed.

  12. Let me clarify. A flywheel with a starter ring gear on it.

    Makes sense.

  14. Been goofing around a bit. With the engine sitting in the mock up/run stand-frame, we mocked up the cast iron model A exhaust manifold I have. The manifold collector flange over hangs the frame. That means a trip to the mill. Checked the tram first. Then proceeded to take off 250 thousands (1/4 in) from the head flange and all looks good. Hand held the SU's I'll be running for a quick visual. 20181005_192905.jpeg 20181005_201954.jpeg 20181005_195430.jpeg 20181005_221106.jpeg

Will the SU's sit 90% to the block, as you are holding them, or on an angle like an MG-TC? Bob

  16. They'll be at an angle. A friend used to run bug eyed sprites and had these sitting on the shelf. Just gave them to me. Nothing fancy, just H1's

  17. The end of the year has sucked for getting any work done on the T. Been fiddle farting around on it when I can. Exhaust manifold made another trip to the mill. Spacers made for the SU's. Dizzy is on, starter is on, and hogs head is sealed up. Made a tab to hold my oil cap on.

  18. Today's work included cutting the exhaust/intake studs down, making a washer to fit both manifolds, and officially bolting them on. Mounted my fan bracket and water pump. Mounted the V pulley set up. That's when we noticed that the water pump was crooked. Chucked it up in the mill and now it's flat. Attached is a quick video.

Looking great, I am doing a speedster build as well

  21. A bit more done. New balance tube made for the SU's, s copper fuel connecting the two, and made up a spark plug wire pass through tube.

I feel with a mill that handy my “well, while I’m at it I may as well...” list would grow quite large. Fun watching you go threw this engine :)

Dan Iandola made some thick head castings like that in the early 1970's. FullSizeRender-15_zpspfgxnusw.jpg

  25. Getting a little closer to firing off this beast. Mocked up a firewall. No cutting required with that large head. Bolted on a radiator and it's starting to look official.

I've got stock Ford High & Low heads, is that aluminum head just carrying an extra gallon of water? Project looks great. Bob

  27. Along with the extra cooling capacity, it has a take off of the Ricardo combustion chamber.

I had a Ricardo head years ago, about the only item of value on a rusted out Model T chassis.

  29. Heat shield made, SU's gone through, added a fuel line and pressured it up to look for leaks. Threw on a piece of exhaust pipe to keep from dusting ourselves out upon fire up. Getting closer. 20190114_171217.jpeg 20190114_171220.jpeg 20190114_171223.jpeg

Is the heat sheild something you commonly see with those carbs? I see a lot of inliner guys talk about adding heat into the intakes but not about shielding the carb.

Though I normally see them with a downdraft carb, wondered if it Ben g side draft was the difference.
