It was suggested to me (in that high performance transmission forum) to wait till I came to a stop before running the shifter up to first, I have a pretty decent converter but it feels like free wheeling while coasting to a stop anyway. Sometimes I don't wait till I'm completely stopped but I feel no difference, it's like it's in neutral from the converter. I do often bump it that one notch up into neutral while at the lights, like was mentioned there's no load on the engine and it bumps the idle back up to around 12-1400 rpm.
I'm not saying every reverse manual valve body acts like mine, just relaying how mine is. Also I still say for the original poster to just put a quality shift kit in his forward pattern valve body. That way he can manually run it through the gears when he's feeling a bit ornery or leave it in "D" when he's out for a Rt.44 beverage from Sonic.

I know what you guys are saying about the converter and being able to wait until you have stopped until you shift into neutral but keep this in mind ,if you have a manual value body either forward or reverse pattern you should never just leave it in "drive" ,you have to go through the gears anyway and most of the time you don't go from 50 mph to a dead stop so you should be downshifting anyway even if your loose converter hides this fact .You may slow down and just resume your speed and that way your in the right gear { I learned this in the tri-axles and semi's I have } I have a Coan reverse manual with a 3500 stall in my 31' coupe and to me it does make driving more fun than a "normal" auto.
