well i know it isnt a big deal to most of you,but to me it was a thrill to be able to do this. this is the original El Matador.my friend Fuzzy was kind enough to let my stupid *** take pics in it..
I heard there's a crazy story behind that car, how it was burnt-or-wrecked and brought back to life. Either way, I've always really liked the car too.
Wow that thing's got some real history. Is there still green paint under the red? I have seen pics of the first time around while it was being painted the green. That had to be awesome to sit in that time machine. I know when I sit in my neighbors old hot rod in his shed it makes me feel pretty lucky, one day that car will be mine.
When I owned the car in the seventies, we stripped the car and there was green paint on one rear fender and that was all. I don't think it was ever totally green. This is a picture of the car in Cushenbery's shop before it was painted the first time. The car as it exists would have none of the original paint because the car was severely burnt in the garage fire before Murphy restored it. The car was never in a movie to my knowledge. Anyone with any history of the car, I would love to hear it.
I'd love to sit in that car! It's one of the few "extreme" customizings of a 40 that IMO turned out gorgeous! It's just a beautiful custom that is very well executed! Thanks for the pics!
......"isn't a big deal" my ***! That car and the Jade Idol are two of my all time favorite "show cars" from the 50's. Awesome opportunity in MY opinion! Congrats and thanks for sharing the experience.......
hahaha...my best friend sitting next to me in the car is Lenny so the old farts started calling me Squigy...it stuck!
My Dad was in the Navy in California when that car was originally being built. He has told me about seeing it during the construction of the car. Back in about 92 we went to to Turkey Run and he got to see the car again for the first time since the early 60's....it was really cool to see his expresion when he saw the car again. I think it is a milestone car, not one that is universally loved, but a milestone none the less. Bill
