In my experience, the easiest way to remove chrome is to take it to the chromer and have them dip it in their chemical magic to remove it. If you're just looking to paint the item, you could also sand it well to rough, prime and go. -scott noteboom
The easiest way is to take them to a chrome shop and say "strip the chrome of this please." It'll cost you though, and it's not an at home solution.
well, i need to strip it so i can do some welding underneath. Maybe ill call the chrome shop, i was just wondering if there was an easy way to do it at home. thanks wes
depending on the piece and your skills with the tool-- you could always just grind that shit off to bare metal. i've done it before on bumpers without fucking them up. -scott noteboom
i have heard that blasting with baking soda, removes all chrome, and it can be done at home, and the supplies are rather cheap. someone was even talking about doing it while on the body, but im doubtfull about that. let me try to find that thread for you. this isn't the exact thread i was thinking of, but let me keep looking. http://www.chevytalk.org/threads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1531537/an/0/page/0#Post1531537 yeah its chevytalk, but some good stuff in that thread keith
thanks for the thread guys, maybe ill try hitting it with a grinder lightly, seems like once chrome chips of flakes in one place it will come up pretty easily
the steps involves are a little detailed, so do a google search on stripping chrome plating, AND stripping nickle plating, and you will find many good hits detailing the process. then it's up to you to determine if you really want to give it a try. i have done it myself, and had mixed results through the learning process, but it's been a while since i have done it, so i really don't remember much of the details, but bottom line is yes it can be done at home, i don't know about the cost effectiveness vs having parts stripped by a plating shop.
Media blasting it with a standard abrasive works for me. Its easier to control where and how much you take off. You can even watch how many layers you're taking off. Remember that as soon as you take off a little of the chrome the rest will start to flake as the metal underneath corrodes so you'll need to have it rechromed or painted. The heat from welding will also make it curl up around the heat affected area. It is also important to get all the chrome away from the weld area as it will make the weld brittle.
CAt piss works GREAT....just look at the rims on my Galaxie!....might be hard to get a whole vt of it though.....
