So, I have been collecting parts for the 55 makeover and I have been storing parts in the trunk as they come in. Well, I worked on it Labor Day and then put it back in the shop. Well, now the keys have gone missing. So, I can't get in the trunk or start the car to move it. I keep hoping they will surface. If not, how can I get in the trunk without destroying the lock? I can replace it if necessary, but I don't want to destroy the mechanism. I thought about pulling the back seat, but the trunk is full of boxes...heavy boxes, so anyway, I feel pretty dumb about now.
I wonder if locksmiths can even make keys for old Fords anymore. The ones I have around here don't seem too ambitious.
We have a locksmith in our local club and she has ***ured me they can make a key if I bring on a door cylinder. I imagine the same is true with the ignition switch. If your keys all still match (you use the same key) , you should be able to get one made.
The trunk is different from all the rest of the locks on 56. I think the glove box lock might be the same as the trunk.
If you can get inside the car remove the back seat and with a long pole you can trip the latch from inside. Had to do that when my solenoid slipped out of place on the electric trunk latch.
Notice he said "keys" ? So that pretty much says you are screwed, like most of us all the keys are on the same key ring. Not a bad idea to get some spares and slip in your wallet.
Tape a spare key on the bottom inside of your taillight lens (so it won't show when the lights are on), you'll just need a screwdriver or a rock to get to it.
I have two extra sets. I keep one hanging on a nail above my work bench. The other I plan on hiding on the car somewhere after I fix the hatch lock.
I have a 2nd set for my Ford in the top drawer of my tool box. I'll have to take a look to see if they are still there... I got a bunch of new Ford blanks on eBay. I had broken my trunk key and went to Ace Hardware to see if they could make a new one. I was lucky and they were able to clamp the two pieces in the key holder.
I have two sets of keys for all my cars. Keep them in different places so if I lose one I know where the other set is.
Sounds like an old Texas Aggie joke. When automakers 1st moved the dimmer switch from the floor to the stalk on the column Aggies would have wrecks because their left foot got tangled in the steering wheel...
Aggies are known for strange behavior and minor disasters. A few months ago there was a horrible accident near College Station. Five Aggies in a pickup went off a bridge and into a lake. The 2 in the cab got out OK but the 3 in the bed drowned because they couldn't get the tailgate open.
I heard about a couple of Aggies that bought a woody wagon. When they got it home they tore all the wood off the car. One of them said to the other, "Ya know sumfthin, the car looked better when it was still in the box."

Welp, keys are still missing. I haven't had time to work on it anyway. I plan to start working it a bit this weekend.
I guess you'll just have to remove the back seat, and get at all those heavy boxes to access the mechanism. I keep a extra set hidden in the garage. Good luck
