Hey everyone. I have a 283 SBC that I built myself. Its the first engine I have ever built. I took it to a mechanic to finish off some things. They went to fire it up and oil started pumping out of the PCV valve port at the back. I am using breathers on the valve covers instead of the PCV port so they blocked the PCV port off with a grommet but the pressure blew the grommet out! Does anyone know what may have caused this? I thought it could have been an issue with crank case ventilation - possibly the wrong style of breathers on the valve covers, but could it be something more sinister? Cheers hambers!
If it has a breather port at the back it should have a canister type baffle inside the "V" under the intake manifold. If it isn't there and you just have a hole with no baffle, I'm sure oil will blow out back there.
Put a steel freeze plug in the back hole in the block. Put a PCV , connected to manifold vacuum in one valve cover. Put a breather in the other one and see what ya got..Report back
I feel that its a combination of things. I didn't put the canister baffle in there because I wasn't going to use that port for PCV. I think that, coupled with poor flowing breathers, coupled with a poorly fitted block off grommet might combine to be the cause of this problem. I'm going to head down to see the mechanic now and see whats up.
So I went down and had a look. It wasn’t pumping from the PCV, but the unblocked oil pressure port next to the PCV.. as for the grommet that blew out. It was blown off due to a build up of pressure as the breathers weren’t correct for the valve covers. The vents were blocked due to the breathers sitting with the base resting on the valve cover, stopping the air flow. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
They started your brand new motor without having an Oil Pressure gauge hooked up or priming the oil system prior to First Fire? WTF? The Wizzard
This situation about firing it up without proper priming has made me pretty uneasy to be honest. I might hunt around and find a more reputable hot rod mechanic to get this thing going, even if it costs a bomb. Better than having serious damage done to my new engine.
Where are you? There are plenty of us from Australia on here, someone will be able to point you in the right direction of a mechanic who actually knows what they're doing.
I live in the Blue Mountains. I had a good long chat with him yesterday about the whole process. He's pretty keen on getting this engine sorted and believes he'll have the job done mid week. I'm going to let him run with it this week and see where we end up. He's a super good dude and hasn't ever let me down before so I ought to throw a little faith his way.
