'63-'67 ford/mercury 427 "r" cars

    I owned a 375 hp 4 speed 62 all I can say the t10 was not up to the task numerous times.

    Here is our all-original 427/410hp, circa 1974. Paid $700 for it. No, not the air cleaner, the whole car, as is. Original owner was so careful he had newspaper down on all the floors so the floormats/carpet didn't get dirty.
    He must have driven it pretty hard though, the T-10 would pop out of 3rd gear on decel. Even better, we sold the car for just over twice what we paid for it. Oh wait......

    Maybe somebody knows the car, this was Detroit suburbs.

    I've been digging for all the old ET-MPH I can from these big cars lately - I think the "little" 7" NHRA tires hurt them or they would have run even better, especially the 4-speed cars. The Ed Martin 63 LWG "should have" won the 1963 Indy NHRA nationals as the winning dodge was found illegal. No record of what ET-MPH either of them ran since the whole class was deleted. That same year 1963 Pomona Winternationals, Ed Terry won B/S in what had to be a 406/385 63 Gal. Again I cant find an ET-MPH.

    Lots of NHRA wins out there even at nationals, for the 406 and 427 big cars.
    But overall, it seems the 427 Gals had their most NHRA success as AUTOMATICS - less demanding on tires, and yet Ford never offered the car that way.

    Then again I never saw an original with power steering either until loudbang just posted that Merc above.

    I had a 67 in HS , transplanted 69 428SCJ , Big Spline Top Loader , 3.90 TracLok from a smashed 69 Cobra . Not an R car by any means ! But plenty fun for a HS kid

    Love this thread. while I'm a mopar guy I also like the 427 cars from back then. My friend had a new 63 ford convertible with 410 HP 4spd that we added the two 4s to that car was something else on Woodward race seen, It was Red with Black convertible top and red XL interior. Not sure if he bought it from Bob Ford in Dearborn, Mi. Can't be to many Red 427 convertibles that were sold?

    Unrestored, not an "r". Originally a 352, 427 installed at a later date. Has 4-speed top loader and came with OG headers not currently installed due to ground clearance issues.

    I am looking to buy a 63 or 64 R code Galaxie. Any idea on values now? It seems these cars have dropped in value over the last few years. I know good restored cars that are all original bring the most money, but do some colors bring more money if they are painted in original color? Anyone selling any R code cars can contact me. Thanks

    Question for the Ford experts. A man who worked for my dad for 30 years bought a new 63 1/2 Galaxie with 390 and 4 speed. He wasn't a hot rodder of any sort at all. He'd previously been a truck driver back in the 50's and preferred manual transmissions, and the car he bought just happened to be the only manual trans Galaxie the dealer had in stock.

    But, the 390 had solid lifters, cast iron headers that looked like the ones used on 406's and 427's, and a Holley carb on an iron manifold. Thinking maybe the engine was a left over 406 since the 427 had just come out, I looked with a flashlight to see if the bolt heads were there for cross bolted mains, but there were none. Ford's literature at the time, at least the brochures I saw back then, didn't show any option for a solid lifter 390. Any idea what that engine was, and was it actually a common option?

    FWIW, he retired in the early 90's and drove that car to work daily until he retired as it was his only car. Unfortunately, the last mile or so to his house was a dirt road for a number of years, and the car was riddled with rust by the time he retired to the point where it would've needed just about a complete rebody to be presentable.

  18. Years ago (1988-89 or so) in La Mesa, California, I saw a '66 Mercury Cyclone sitting in a back yard. It was red and had the large front edge hood scoop and "427" badges on it. I drove by many times and when I FINALLY went to ask about it, it was gone. My usual luck.

    Most 406s did not have cross bolt mains but they did have aluminum intakes.

    It was a 390 Police Interceptor Special. They were rated at 330 horsepower and had solid lifters. It was a popular option.

    We ran a 67 Fairlane station wagon in S/E in the early 70s until I rolled it. We then built a coupe for SS/E, no more 7 inch tires for me ! Both cars were clones. I also had a 57 Ford Custom 300 with a 427/425 & 4 speed out of a wrecked 63 1/2 R code Galaxie back in 1964. I tried to put a picture on here but not having any luck doing it

    Wow....
    Missed this thread first time around, but I flew over to USA from the UK for SAAC-16, and recently got around to scanning my slides from that trip, and sure enough I took a photo of this T-Bolt, the first one I'd ever seen of course :)

    Likely the B/S=9.50 car wouldve been a 62 Gal 406/385hp-4v, I dont think the 405hp-6v fits class.
    Only diff was the intake & carb, 4v at 600cfm, 6v at about 720cfm at the same 1.5" Hg. Better fuel distribution helped a little on the 6v too as it usually does.

    I always thought the 390/330hp-PI came with an Autolite 4100 on top, the 1.12 at about 500cfm. I never looked at ours, was too young, but that's what the books all say. The later Holley R4548 was a service carb for the 390 but I dont think they came factory. Yes, the 390/330-PI came with an iron intake, same boat anchor as the 390/300 (pretty good boat anchor), but had a solid cam, about equal to the later 390GT cam, and the good exhaust iron, same ones the 352HP, 390HP, and 406 got. The 1963 390/330-PI likely came with the C3AE-C heads, so more like 10.5 CR instead of the 9.6 CR the vanilla 390's had. Good engine, did well in NHRA also.

    I'd be curious too, I've heard of that but it doesn't make much sense to run a 65 Gal in AA/S=7.00-8.69 class. At W/P=8.50 the 65 Gal 427/425 is right at the top of the later 1968 B/S=8.50-8.99 class which is where Glidden ran & won.

    To run a 65 Gal 427 Med Riser vs a 64 Gal Hi Riser ram air, well, would be kinda unfair / embarrassing I would think. Unless MAYBE it was a T-wedge but that would be A/S in 1966 or Superstock in 1967-up where any intake was allowed. IIRC the T-wedge didnt come out til about 1968 anyway?
    So I wonder if the 65 is a misprint.

    Schmitt's 66 Gal ran in B/FX, a 427 SOHC.

    Sorry, no pictures....in 1962 a guy (Ron Ritnaur) that lived just a few miles from me in SW Iowa (farm country) purchased a new Galaxie, a cheap red two door, 406, 385 horse, stick and OD, I did get a ride in it one night but he didn't drive it like he stole it:( The undercarriage was painted white and he lived at least five miles from hard surface roads. He was VERY careful with it. Not too long after that (1964) another friend, Larry, bought a R code 64 Galaxie two door hardtop, four speed, he could engulf slicks in tire smoke, I was impressed. A couple of years ago I was talking to Larry at the Greenfield swap meet where he told me he was looking for FE parts, the long cast exhaust manifolds specific to the R code motors. He had purchased the 62 from Ron and somehow had a R Code 427 that he put in it after he came back from Vietnam, he raced it and did fine. I asked about the old 62and he said the car is really rough now but he built a clone of the 62 with the 427 but he did say it didn't hook up like the old 406 car. He is only an hour away, I need to touch base just to see that old car before either he or I croak:)
