    I recently found a complete Chevy inline 6 for my 1954 chevy 210.. The Serial # is 55FI24P.. I cannot find anything even close anywhere online. I'm trying to find out what motor I have and that is indeed a 235.. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

    it's a weird number, for sure. you're not in or near Canada, are you? :)

    Is there a casting date code on the block, near the starter? letter followed by a few numbers, such as A 21 5

    also, is it an early or late engine, is the water pump in the block or above the block?

    let us know

    I am in Oklahoma.. The markings by the starter are, CON 4 A 16 7. On the water pump I dont guess I'm understanding what you mean. The water pump is in the front of the block just behind the fan.

    the date January 16 1957 sounds right for an engine with the big hole that the water pump fits into the block. the earlier engines, through 1954, used a water pump that fits in front of, and partly above the block. you have to do some work to get the 55 and later engines to fit the 54 and earlier cars...although someone might have put a later engine in already?

    I still don't know what the number stamped on the engine means, maybe a picture of it would help, maybe not. The P suffix was used in the late 50s for a 283 engine in a truck, but you obviously don't have a 283 engine here.

    My 1960 Canadian 261's serial number is W9-242838. Below the casting number on the same side of the block is a small rectangular centered with a M and on the bottom side of the rear main cap is a cast wording Canada.
    The engine came with a #848 cylinder head on it. dyno dave

    A=January, B=February, etc.
    Your F=June.
    12=12th day of the month.
    4=1954
    So your engine was made on June 12, 1954

    And it would be a 235.
    The earlier 216s had two bolts in-line down the middle of the valve cover. 235s had bolts on the flange.

    uh....I think the 55F124P number is stamped, and the letter for the month thing was only used on the cast date code, not the stamped date code.

    and the 124 (January 24th) assembly date matches well with the A 16 casting date

    Wait. I didn't read well enough. The numbers by the starter are A167? Squirrel said it. In that case, yes...January 16, 1957. Good that you've got a post-'54 engine. Mainly better oiling.

    Now, let's see the motor mounts & water pump/radiator to see how nice the job came out.

    On a weird note...saw a 235 engine with 'Captain's Bars' I had heard that such an anomaly existed and actually got to see one. It turns out you can't judge a book by it's cover. LOL

    those stamped numbers look like typical factory number stamps...interesting. I wonder if it was a replacement engine?

    I dont know on it being a replacement. Guy that owns the local flea market said he had a complete 235 for 200 bucks. So I grabbed it. My main thing is that I actually have a 235 and it will fit in my 54 chevy 210.. Started looking up numbers and nothing made any sense and I wasnt finding anything that helped the issue.
