Just bought this over the weekend. It should be here sometime in the next couple of weeks. If there is any shipping advice, I'd appreciate hearing your advice or experience. So far quotes for the 1100 mile trip are between $600 and $925. I figure I could do it myself for about $500 in fuel. The plans are to drop it down, 32 grill, upgrade the 'banger, chop the top and take off the fenders. But I'm open to suggestions
Get it shipped -fuel, meals, lodging, etc. it all adds up - Unless you are looking for an excuse for a road trip. Looks like a excellent car to start with! Have fun!
plus you can sell the fenders and some of the other parts to help with the shipping cost. Looks nice thought.
Yeah, ship it. go to moveontime.com and click on the auto transport link. Call and ask for Andy. Tell him John in Austin sent you and tell him what your transporting. He's always been very good to me and digs the old cars. No, I'm not related and I don't get a cut or anything, just have had good experience. Another quote never hurts. This is if one of the HAMB transporters can't do it of course. Try BenD and the usual suspects. Cool, nice ride, good luck, John Joyo...
One quote came from uship.com and the other from haulingdepot.com or something. I'll look at Hemmings online for others. Thanks guys.
Fuck shipping, go get it your self. Has everyone forgotten that the trip to get is part of it. What stories are you gonna tell if you dont talk to the previous owner and get his stories? I would go get it myself, but I guess thats just me. Anyone else that would, speak up and be counted.
Well, somebody's gonna say it, might as well be me. Don't hot rod it. but a piece of shit model a to cut up. One that there is no hope for but to rod it.
I agree! Some cars are better off left alone. Sell it, make a profit and buy one thats more sutable. IMHO>
I kinda have to agree with these fella's. Looks too sharp to cut up. Restorers would love to have this and they would pay good $.
I've shipped 2 cars through Teeter Transport. Talk to Joe or Jonathan and tell them Adam in MN sent you. 402-933-3618 http://www.teetertransport.com
Go get it yourself. The road trip is part of the experience, you do not know what else you may find on the trip. I'm leaving the first of next month to pick up my sons 51 Henry J in Calif. I am looking forward to the trip, if I have room on the trailer, I may pick something else up, when and if I find it.
I have to agree with the going to get it yourself. I have always went and got my own. I guess I really don't trust anybody else with my stuff. I also like to see where it lived and get a feel for how it has been treated. I also agree that you should clean it up and sell it as restorable and then buy a good project car to Hot Rod. Just my Oppinion. Gumpa
Why the crying over an A Sedan? I can't remember anyone saying, "That Deuce is too nice to cut. Or don't cut that Merc, a restorer might want it."?
if I seen a deuce that looked this original. i'd say the same. The deuce may not look as cooll original. but i bet it would bring bigger bucks.
There's nothing wrong with wanting to hop that car up with some speed stuff, an overdrive, some juice brakes, maybe some different wheels. Would be a shame to do anymore than that though, I think. I bet if you could get a hold of a 40mpg econo-car, or a bus ticket, you could get out to that car and drive it home. That would be fun. Otherwise, $600 is a swingin' deal to bring it that far. I wouldn't do it for that.
What did you pay for it? Here's what I think... Let's say you got some crazy deal on it for $1000 or something. Flip it, make a profit and use the profit to fund the whole rod. Let's say you paid $12K. First why would you cut up a $12K restored A. Second, you wouldn't. Sell it, put your money into something cheaper that's beggin' to be "saved/cut up". Now, this thing looks nice from the picture, but if you tell us you paid $4K or something and it only looks nice but is completely rusted through, mechanically shot and isn't worth crap than YES, cut that thing up. I say all this, because I honestly think that car is in better shape to make some money maybe even WILD money depending on what you paid that would fund the same car completely screwed and ready for cutting. I'm not saying you shouldn't cut it up, because starting with a nice car like that would be great for the end product, but I see money opportunity if you didn't pay a huge amount for it. Just my $2/100 opinion. Nice car. Now tell us what you have in it and what it's REALLY like!
Yeah, that picture does make it look nice doesn't it. The real story is that there is no interior and there is a little rust in the rear floor. We'll see what it looks like once I get into it. I've started projects with junk before and fought them the whole way - complete is usually the path of least resistance. Plus this project will be evolutionary, I want to spend a few years slowly modifying it as time allows, but always keeping it a 3-season runner. After searching last night, I'm thinking of hopping up the 'banger, maybe swapping in a later tranny, juice brakes and lowered suspension. The fenders may be left, get stored in the rafters or sold, we'll see...and you will have a voice. Although I really doubt I could go get it right now.
