A friend of mine (no computer) called and asked about some Chevy cylinder heads that he has. I know nothing about Chevy heads so thought I'd ask here. Maybe someone can help or tell me where to look Basically he wants to know what these things are worth. A friend of his want to buy them, but he doesn't want to take advantage of the guy, but he doesn't want to just give them away. Here are the numbers (2) 333882 heads (1.94 x 1.5 valves) (2) 3973493 also (1.94 x 1.5 valves (2) 3947040 heads (2.02 x 1.6 valves Thanks for any help Jim
The 882 castings came on a 350 or a 400... The 400 version has the steam holes in between the combustion chambers. Both have the 76cc chambers.. The 493 castings are 400 heads.. cc's range from 71-76cc Both of these castings came with the 1.94" Int and 1.50" Exh valves with steam holes between the chambers.... I wouldn't pay more than 50 bucks a pair for these ones if they were in good shape. I'm not sure what the story is on the "040" castings... Sorry! Maybe someone else can answer that one for ya!
The 3947040 heads might be good. I'm not at the shop to look at the whole number, but I have a set I beleive are the same. The set I have are just like the 041 300hp 350 heads in 1969. Except they don't have accessory holes. The ports and combustion chambers look just like the 041 and 186 castings. The fact someone took the trouble to cut them for 2.02 and 1.6 valves is promising too.
'68 327 275hp heads. 64cc chamber. Like you say, nearly the same head as the 300hp 350 uses except no 'accessory' holes. As to value, I have no idea of today's market price.
All pretty good heads. The 882/493 breathe well and are good castings ( I have a pair of each on 406sbc) but the 76ccs are compression killers on smaller motors. Now the bad part. With the popularity of LS series chevy motors ( making our motors and heads old and out dated technology)and the dirt cheap (from like 475.00 a pair and built with way better traits than stockers)import alum cylinder heads, "old" iron heads are not worth much to most guys unless they need stockers for a resto. I say 75.00 to 250.00 depending on the condition. thats my 2 cents
I snapped some pictures of the 040 heads I have on the shelf. I took pictures and I am posting them because I beleive they are somewhat rare. It's the only set I have seen, and because they don't have the 2 humps they may be overlooked. They could be nice heads that look alot like the power pac head that fits right into the traditional hotrods we like so much on HAMB..... Jeff
Jeff As I pointed out in this thread https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/strange-small-block-chevy-head-casting-mark.1013792/ the reason they look the same as a fuelie is because they are. They are identical to a 291 in 1.94/1.5 valve variety. They are simply Tonawanda's cast number and mark, whereas 291's are Flint (Saginaw) cast. Same deal with 041 and 186. Only real difference is you won't find these ex factory with 2.02/1.6 valves and thus were limited to the 1968 L30 (327/275) and the 1968 L48 (350/295).
