What’s the best fuel pump for a y block? I have an airtex pump from rock auto and it’s putting out 10lbs of pressure and I’m chasing fuel leaks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Geez mine puts out 4. If you want to keep it add a regulator. Our race cars puts out 10+ regulated to 5.5 max.
I ran into the same thing, same pump. ****ers. Sure are a lot of ****ty parts out there. Counterfeit distributors and defective fuel pumps. A regulator should not be necessary. I went with a NORS from Mcdonaldsparts. We'll see how it holds up to modern fuel. Not gonna worry about it. Works great. $99 https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/253866914774
Definitely a piss off. Drove the car to fill it up with gas before I park it for the winter and find this. Do I buy a new pump and risk the same problem or add a regulator I shouldn’t need? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If you decide on a regulator, get a good one, not one,of those cheap ones with the dial on top. They leak or fail in short order. I’m partial to Areomotive, but there’s others. If you’re running a stock carb on a y block the required pressures are pretty low.
I bought the one in the pic. Spec in manual is 3.5 - 5.5 psi. It measures 5.5 psi. They have one left. I have pretty much swore off any new manufacture parts if at all possible. NOS or NORS are made to better tolerances, they fit better, and made with better materials. Modern parts are less expensive but throwing away the ****ty parts and having to buy them over again plus the labor involved and aggravation you won't have saved any money.
How long ago did you buy it? Send it back and get your money back if wasn't that long ago. Check their return policy.
I’ll probably buy this pump and keep the one I have now for my emergency road trip parts box Thanks Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I recommend a Carter M3528 fuel pump as it puts out 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 psi. This fuel pump is used on Y block and FE engines. Summit carries this pump but states the psi rating incorrectly at 10 psi. I called Carter to double-check and they confirmed 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 psi.
I wonder if shortening the fuel pump diaphragm rod or putting in a weaker spring would lower the output pressure.
Yes, but the cheaper pumps (like that Airtex) aren't put together with screws, they are crimped. Rebuild kits for the Carter I posted above are something like $10, if ever needed.
I guess I haven't seen a non-rebuildable fuel pump for a Y-block. I have 3 of them, including the one on my car and they're all rebuildable OEM's. I'm holding on to all of them.
Thanks for all the great advice. I ordered the carter pump, $50 Canadian delivered. It should be here next week. I couldn’t find a NOS pump that would ship to Canada. I’ll also dig through my leftover parts boxes in the attic and see if I have the pump that came on the engine and if I can rebuild it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Will do, hopefully I get another good drive in before winter storage Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Follow up Results inconclusive. I replaced the airtex pump with the new Carter pump and it leaked much worse than before, but this time from the gauge. I took the gauge off and replaced it with a pipe plug. Now the car is running great with no leaks but the gauge is sitting on my bench reading 4psi. I’m blaming ethanol gas and Chinese manufacturing. I found 3 y-block fuel pumps available. I may need one for a 292 installed in a 1956 T-bird. Which of these are the best? Airtex Carter US Motor Works
I recommend the carter. I’ve had the carter on my car for two summers now and no problems. The airtex put out too much pressure and causes leaks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The airtex pump definitely put out too much pressure, then the gauge started leaking. I’m ***uming the high pressure pump ruined the gauge. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
