Well, I haven't been in the panhandle in years but, you can always go to the tumbleweed races.... Maybe pick a grudge or two. Be careful though, if you have a tail wind, those tumbleweeds are pretty fast! Sorry, just had to.
Check out John Stromberg's custom pain shop "Lucky's 7 Customs" Cadillac Ranch off I-40 Amarillo Dragway
One thing I'd mention 'bout the Cadillac Ranch, it's on the right going east on I-40, but it kinda far out on the field, so pay attention cause blink and you miss it!
Yeah if you check out Cadillac ranch you gotta be lookin for it. I live in Amarillo theres not a lot to do here. Oh yeah they shut down the Dragway.
john's shop is in acme body shop on 301 ong st. amarillo dragway is now only a dim light of history, torn down for houses. come over to wellington and i'll show you around the junk yard! 100 miles south east of amarillo
Palo Duro Canyon, Panhandle Plains Museum (just South in Canyon), There is a BAD*** Harley shop in the North end of town, dont remember name.
Call Mark Warrick @ Soncy Road and tell him to take you out to dinner and show you 'round the shop. 806-352-0776.
C'mon, tell me you didn't go to the Big Texan yet. Have the limo pick you up, drink a bunch of boots of beer and have a heart stopper of a steak.
Man, you shouldn't put a cravin' like that on poor Texans stuck far from home Big Texan is a fun place -- good food too. There's one special they had that came out in a BIG skillet -- four kinds of meat and four veggies. Don't go if you're not HUNGRY! The play "TEXAS" in Palo Duro is a pretty good outdoor drama. Is there a full moon? Try driving down the calchie roads without your headlights, hunting "parkers" Pantex, bout 14 miles east, is the final ***embly (and now , dis***embly) point of all our atomic bombs. Don't get too close. Drive the back roads until you hit a jackrabbit. (Not reccomended if you're in a compact car -- jackrabbits have been known to win a fight with them!) Alibates flint quarry is not too far away -- nice drive and you get to enjoy looking at the horizon with nothing to interfer with seeing. Don't forget the Helium monument. Nope, not a lot to do round there. 28 miles east on US60 is my home town, Panhandle. Even less to do there.
Get up early and hoof it down to Flat-top Bob's--where else ya gonna find a 60+ acre junkyard with OLD cars??....then back to the Big Texan for supper(dinner in the more sophisticated states) I'd call that a "dream day"......
Flat-Tops place in Wellington is well worth the drive. Go have a burger at Golden Light down on 6th street, old place with good old greasy burgers, some decent antique shops on the same street. Take the other guys advice on checking out Mark Warrick's shop (Soncy Road Paint and Body) and John Stromberg at Acme Body Shop. These guys are top notch painters and usually have cool projects in the shop. Also Jason Eubanks at Eubanks Body Shop off of Canyon E-Way usually has some cool stuff going.
Took in the Cadillac Ranch and the Big Texan. Big F'''n steaks for sure. Thanks for the tips on what to do here. I leave outa here late tomorrow morning. MDM
The only reason to go to the Big texan is to see somebody eat the big steak. Unless something has changed, the food was average. I'm sorry to hear the strip closed. I have lots of memories. I have to say, I'm not surprised. When Bill p***ed away, that was probably the end.
Man, I live there and would love to show you around. I am stuck in So Cal for the week. Got to go to the Cadilac ranch, might be a dissapointment but you can say you have been there. Palo Duro canyon is worth the trip, but the play does not start till next weekend. Go by and see my new 30x40 insulated with heat and air shop going up. Wife is sending me progress pics while I am gone. Best Mexican food La Campanga I27 & 26th st. Big Texan worth the trip just to watch the people, If you ever get back up there give me a heads up for a nickle tour.
