Technical Zip’s riser pump question

Using a Zip’s riser on my SBC.
Looking for advice on which pump to use.
Should I use a high volume pump or a good quality stock replacement ?

I purchased my water pump at NAPA and it's never given me a problem. HRP

 

So a stock replacement is good ?
What application is it ?

As often as this question comes up. How many used risers are being resold that instructions and donor vehicles list are not supplied? Does this happen as well with new risers?

 

Rarely have I ever seen a used riser for sale, I have a list of what a user will need and try to post when the questions are ask. HRP

Part of the problem is the instructions are poorly printed and is eligible.
Ok I got the part numbers for the pulleys, but they are double groove and I’m just running and alternator, so will stock SBC single pulleys work too ?

It might be the belt and suspenders approach but I prefer to have a belt from the crank pulley to the water pump just in case I lose the alternator belt.

Yes. Some complain that water pump doesn't spin fast enough. In that case after market SBC short pump pulley's offer different diameters than stock. Run your stock SBC pulleys first and see what happens before swapping things. Also be sure to bleed all the air out or it will run hot.

 

Speedway sells single or double groove SBC short water pump pulleys in chrome for a really decent price. That’s where I got mine from.

Thanks guys, I’m running a crate 350 so I don’t have any “original” parts like pulleys. I can’t find the lower pulley listed on zip’s instructions new, just used ones on eBay. I got a pump from my local Napa and the water pump pulley is touching the the pump. It’s a very cheap casting so I ordered a better on from Summit, we’ll see if that clears. Ordered an alternato, see if things line up. The pulleys I have are from Summit replacement stock pump and crank. Jason Slover at Pete&Jakes told me they should work( bought the riser from him). He’s been a tremendous help, his advice and experience is worth a few extra buck getting parts from him. IMHO

Dean, I'm sure you know that Moroso (and maybe Mr. Gasket as well) make water pump pulley shims to help get your alignment right.

 

If you get in a pinch I have a pair of pulleys that will work for you. Duplicate to what I have already mocked up on mine.

 

BWP-386HDA from Autozone is the one recommended to me on the hamb. Its an aluminum casting with the closed back impeller. It's supposed to be the "HD" version of the water pump.

hey i'm using a zips riser as well . i had pulleys on my junk shelf that work fine . to answer your original question , i bought a water pump from flow cooler . they even state in their item descriptions that they are perfect for a zips riser. and looking back i see you have one coming from summit . i'll go ahead and post for future search

..............High flow may or may not be the best approach.

 

i'll cross that bridge when i get there.

 

Jason told me the high volume pumps work too well in this situation, circulating the hot water back into the engine before it has a chance to cool off in the radiator.
