For you 8BA guys that aren't running the stock fuel pump what did you do about the hole in the block where the push rod use to be? Thanks, Carl
Thanks F-ONE, but are you talking about the mounting location of the stock fuel pump of the opening in the valve valley where the furl pump push rod goes through? I'm asking about the latter.
Be sure to leave the pushrod bushing in place. Plug it if you wish.....just don’t remove it. Your main oil flow p***es around it and you’d essentially starve your bearings if you pull it.
Thanks Mac, that's what I was asking (worried) about, So i don't need to keep the rod in place, just the bushing?!
There is a tiny freeze plug you can buy but i dont remember the size. Bring the push rod with you too the store and match it up. Sent from my LM-X210(G) using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
On my 8BA I did not plug the hole and did not replace the fuel push rod. No problems and no drop in my oil pressure. I did convert opening to an oil fill tube I made. The screw on cap prevents excessive oil from splashing upward. Been using this for 20 years.
You take the push rod out and leave it like that. As long as the bushing is still in the block it'll be fine. The bushing has a groove cut in it and a tiny metering hole for push rod lubrication. The groove allows oil to byp*** around the bushing and into the cam bearings, that's why it's important to leave it undisturbed. I noticed no significant drop in oil pressure in the 4 years since I removed my push rod. I also made my own oil fill tube to replace the original fuel pump stand.
Pocket Nick is right. I have a new bushing on the counter at home and the oil hole is almost big enough for a toothpick to fit. That being said, I just heated my bushing in a new build and brazed it shut. I wouldn't try to press a plug into it in the block because it will damage the cam bearing if it moves while banging in a plug.
Most folks remove the stock fuel pump when installing an electric pump. You could leave the stock pump in place to serve as a block off but. it wouldn't be practical or useful. Using a block off plate is easier and makes the engine look better. Easy to make a plate out of 1/4 in aluminum.
I have an electric pump at the tank and the original still in place. Only use the eletc. to prime after long down time or ward off vapor lock. Works great.
I found a block off plate on Ebay. Some guy bought the casting for these from an old speed shop company. I bought over a year ago He is no longer selling on eBay but maybe you could find something similar. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
