History His-Story of "Stan Back" the Roadster

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by J.Fishbeck, Mar 13, 2016.

  1. If they decide to run in November, Willie has a starting position of 53. Otherwise we'll have to wait until May. Nice rdstr. What class are you running?

  3. Here's a boring video, of the May run. Course was garbage, and probably won't be any better this year, until there's rain. We'll be back in Oct or Nov if that happens. There's a better video from spectators down towards the big end, but I don't have it, of willies spin.

  8. He is fine. He did a great job driving and handling the spin.

@J.Fishbeck while in search of all things Hotrod/Custom/Race I found this historic gem...just another example of the good ole days...my question to you is this the Stan Back Roadster?

@Stogy it is the first time incarnation of this long-time hot rod.

It was fitted with the Ford six, then the Jimmy six, then a sbc with and without mechanical fuel injection, and even a "hemi".

    Damn that's a nice car

  13. Nov2018 El Mirage
    Willie Martin driving
    Saturday's run was 191mph on Jim's own 193.93 record

    This is Sunday morning's run
Temp was high 20's, low 30's
With just enough head wind, to lower your expectations at the line..

  14. Holy smokes that spin was crazy! Expertly handled!

Here's a photo from Riverside Raceway drags. I'm back from the Army and had my new 442 and the roadster out at the races. My old drag race partner, Jim Mackey, drove the Olds and gated me by a couple of car lengths (typical), but I caught him before the lights in the roadster.

In the early 90s I was helping(?) Steve Batchelor with his Monza. It still holds the C/Classic Fuel Altered records at both Bonneville (243) and El Mirage (213) from 1992. I drove up from San Bernardino. When I converted the roadster back to a race car, I set the Bonneville C and D Street Roadster records with Steve's engines in the early 2000s. The roadster still holds the El Mirage record at 193. Willie freshened the valves a couple of years ago and he's still chasing my 193 record. I've acquiesced into using the correct rear gear so he might have a chance in the future. (Somebody please fix the picture for me, thanx!)

. . . and finally, Here's a shot of the "sell-off" at the LA Roadster Show – about 2001 or so. I sold the seat pan and that's all I remember. They didn't appreciate the presentation. We thought it was great fun. ( I guess I need help here, too.)

A much younger man, Lee Tillman, from Texas. He knows what it is and where it came from (and bought it any way). He's driven at Bonneville and been to El Mirage and plans to do it some more. Here's it looking much finer than I've been keeping it the last few years . . . HRShdn2020 OMD-0160-Edit.jpg
