Is that heater in the bottom photo a Hot Wave brand? It looks almost identical to the Hot Wave heater I have in my truck. That thing can turn the cab of my truck into an oven.
wow, another 36 truck with and ash tray...haven't seen one other than mine...I guess you could get and ash tray and cig lighter in an old truck in 36..
I love the classic look of any of the vintage heaters. I wanted to put one in my 28 A, found one on ebay for $90 and a little bigger one for $115, same company. I just want something to keep the windshield clean. Kind of thinking about finding a vintage one now.
I don't have any experience with any of the aftermarket heaters. The issue I have with them is getting replacement parts. heater cores and fan motors don't last forever . the heater in my 32 is one I built in high school metal shop from a 65 mustang core and blower . simple and parts will likely be around longer than I am. I like the idea of adding a vintage looking cover. heater valve is a good Idea to control the temp and also to protect the heater core . I blew the tank off the end of mine at 7k rpm's small block fords can build a huge amount of coolant pressure at high rpm
Not to highjack this thread but does anyone have photos of what an original heater in a 35-36 might have looked like? I'm guessing it would have been dealer installed so maybe it all depended on where the dealer was and what was available locally. Never seen one that actually said Ford on it so its' likely there wasn't any such thing, would love to be wrong on that. Thanks
I'm running this Francisco in my '38 with a computer fan, but the core has started leaking. It was fine with an unpressurized cooling system, but when I went to pressurized with an 8lb cap it started leaking. I soldered it, but it leaked again so I guess I'm looking for a new core.
Here's an old Sun warm heater I picked up at a swap meet. The core is rectangular I am going to use it in a 33 chevy coupe. Here's a good 12 volt motor to use its very similar in size to the one in this heater. I hope this helps someone.
Here's a plain jane Harrison thats been in our 40 ford for ever just added a 12 volt motor works great.
I look on e-Bay for a heater core that will fit and mount it in the vent, I mount a ball valve on one of the hoses under the hood. The mount a 4" radiator fan in the speaker grill for a defroster. That way I can pull all the HVAC stuff. They also make tubing with ribs on it. Just run hot water thru it and you have nice heat. Just trying to give you some ideas..
Ok, NAPA # 655-1022, and the dimensions and specs are here: https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/BK_6551022 I checked this pretty good and it'll fit right in the heater I have for my 39 (which I think is like 41-48). This may also fit several other brands. I thought it was a winner but I'm not there yet with mine. Still need to 'grain the case and put it all back together. Hope it helps. And BTW, I neglected to say before, and not for nuthin, y'all's some creative MoFos with these heaters. Very imnpressive, very inspiring.
He had a restored heater advertised on the HAMB about two months ago. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/vintage-heater-restored.1123594/
Since I cut out the bottom of the gas tank in the coupster, I was able to fit an old International truck heater in there, used the NAPA motor, lighted switch and Ford p/u manual valve. The in/out tubes would come out the top of the cowl, so I cut them (1/2" copper tubing) added elbows, etc and on the ends of the tubes, sweated on 1/2" copper connectors to hold the hose ends on. Even without a roof, it puts out enough to keep me from shivering. Plus my homemade Home Depot canvas dropcloth tonneau cover and US Navy wool blanket, cut and stitched to velcro under the dash, fit around the shifter and wrap around my butt, keeps the heat contained around the vitals. RB
We did the same with our A roadster, using Velcro along the bottom of dash.. The blanket kept the heat on our laps, and with a jacket on, we were quite good.
My 51 came with a south wind heater. If you look up south wind heaters on the ol inter webs they restore them and they are about 250ish.
I have a 1939 Stock heater unit that I adapted a 12 volt motor - have a push - pull for the water flow - only thing missing is variable speed type switch to control fan speed. For now - toggle OFF/ON - only. Would be great to adjust the fan blower motor speed.
NAPA has a variable speed knob type that lights when on, 12V. I'll see if I can find the # or look on-line.
A vintage colombus radio with a modern heater core and fan concealed . No hot water shut off , just a toggle switch fan . It does take the edge off on a cold day.
Go to NAPA online and check out: HC6144 2 amp/12 volt It clamps to bottom of dashboard, but I disassembled it, got a lock nut and drilled and added through the '29 fuel tank "dash". Its a rotary rheostat type to control the fan speed. HC6050 4 amp/6 volt-same thing.
I keep telling myself I need to put a heater in my 61 F100. It came from AZ so it has aftermarket A/C, but no heater.
And I threw my heater away years ago cause someone told me real hot rods don't need heaters , darn it's been cold in there all those 58 years !
I actually saw one recently that had been done with a [65] smaller Mustang heater core and electric solenoid for water and can't recall whether or not it was on HAMB. Once heater was repainted it looked great; you wouldn't know about the recore. I have a NOS Southwind (Stewart Warner) however I WON'T be using it the way it was intended nor will I be gutting it for a rebuild. Plenty of cores still out there.
Here's my little Harrison swap meet find that's going in the model a. Took the core into the local rad shop and had it pressure tested ...it was ok. Added a Spal 4 inch fan on the back to replace the original 6v unit. $100 total investment. Like the smaller size of this one as the model a doesn't have a lot of extra space to spare. Even found an old ad from 37 where they originally sold for $12.95!
I came across this stude heater in a swap meet box of parts. Ran 12V to it and the fan came on Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
