Technical French flat in a stock 32 frame

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by HaroldDegand, Nov 19, 2018.

  1. Hi, I need some help.

On my project, I'll put a french flat in my stock 32 frame.

I'll use the original engine mounts, like this

    So, here are my questions.

Which type of water pumpe should I use for a wide belt ?
I don't want the engine mount on them.
    Just like that :

    Also, which crank pulley ?

    Thanks

49-53 wide belt crank pulley, with 8ba timing cover to match

I've seen many guys just cut the legs off the water pumps. Buy the pump you need, then get out the sawsall and grinder.

A truck pump with cutoff legs might be cleaner than those car pumps with the nub sticking downward.

The factory wide belt pumps like you show came on '49 Ford cars and '53 Ford trucks.

Cut the mounting leg off. It will be cleaner, and cost you less.

  7. On a 239 french flat, the water pump pulleys don't have the same diameter.
Also, the crank pulley has 2 different sheave size.
So your suggest is to cut the leg ?
Ok, so I'll take a look at this solution.
    Thanks to you all

USA Ford car pumps switched from one wide 5/8" belt turning both pumps in '49 to one narrow (3/8") belt for each pump in '50-'53, using offset pump pulleys with different sheave diameters and driven by a cast iron crank pulley with two sheave sizes, and is probably what you have. The French flatty is basically late flathead in front and early flathead at the rear.
