And, as an FYI for 4wd fans, that tab on the top will allow you to pick one up through the cab with an engine hoist, with an NP203 attached, balanced quite nicely.

I can't imagine what might happen to a transmission case from being powder coated!

I have had several powder coated transmission housings over the years, both manual, and automatic.

Our AV power train components at work are powder coated.

That's because Torqueflites do not run any fluid through the cooler in park. This was a problem with police cars that set and idled for extended periods in park. You were supposed to idle them in neutral and raise the idle if you were running the AC. Most had had throttles for this purpose. A GM350 does circulate fluid in all ranges.

The lugs worked good for lifting.

    neat!

I usually just set it up on a milk crate or some 4x6s to mate it to the engine :)

and my wife is quite familiar with lifting one end of a transmission.

Right on both accounts. After I s****ed all the paint off the mating surfaces and crank hub I bolted on the flexplate ( the right way) and put a dial indicator on it. It's out .090 on one side. Guess I better get a new one, huh?
BTW, with the plate on backwards, I could see that the starter teeth weren't going to line up right. Sure glad you guys spotted that.

Nice place here, all right...even of you just want to 'HAMB it up!'
Seriously, there's LOTS of know how around here, and the guys were glad to help.
I've seen those flexplates bolted on (with 1/2" drive impact wrenches!) and when installed backwards...they have a tendency to crack, ever so slightly at first...then sounds like a main bearing knock, (like a lighter 'thud' of a broken crankshaft)
.090" runout...Wow. Yes, new flexplate. Glad you tended to it like you did.

So I got a new flexpate, put it on and checked, this one is out .080. Is it possible/likely that my crank end could be messed up?

I would check it after you have the torque converter bolted to it.

I was wondering if the TC would straighten out the plate, it's so flimsy (flexy).
    I'll try that tomorrow.

Success! Got another flexplate, this one was about .035 out but when I bolted the TC to it and it was perfect. Bolted on the trans, fired her up, got juice flowing thru the hose and the yoke spins in gear( no drive shaft yet). Now on to the rear.... :D

Clap, clap, clap, clap, clap; I'm glad you worked this out! Sometimes, the guys here really do know what they're talking about. Imagine that? I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

Yes, 60 for the plate, 30 for the TC. Thank you for asking.
