Anybody know why the Model T compartment behind the bucket was called a 'Turtle Deck'?

It may have started with the Ford Model N,R, and S, and the term carried over to the T. I think the early ones looked a lot more like a turtle. Bob

Well, isn't that one considered a 'Torpedo'?

The truth is according to trusted sources, that the rear deck was actually made from a large turtle.

    Now why would I lie???

Did people hunt turtles in the old days? If so this would work out well. Bob

Not to hijack this thread of oj's, but why do they call the panel between the ****pit and the deck lid the "tulip panel" on Roadsters?

I like the thumb bell on the left side of the handlebar. Must be the early warning system.

I think the lower corners are what people call "Tulip Panels". because of their shape. The Tulip Bodied Cadillac from 1906 looks like a big Tulip blossom. Bob

  19. They did. Some still do. I could never imagine eating a turtle but my grandfather swore they were some of the best meat.

After some googling, I learned that in building a deck there is a technique to give it a crown so water runs off and they call it 'Turtle Decking'.

    found this

A term applied to a weather deck that is rounded over from the shell of the ship so that it has a shape similar to the back of a turtle. Used on ships of the whaleback type and on the forward weather deck of torpedo boats.

Snapping Turtle stew is really pretty good, and there is a good variety of light and dark meat in them too. They are easily found hiding head first in Muskrat holes in the daylight hours, but if you miss on the first try, you better get your hands out quick, or you can bury them in the mud and hope like hell the turtle doesn't find them.

There are Leather backs and Steel backs, both snappers and good eating. Still hunted and eaten. Turtle stew or meat and a side dish or two. MM MM GOOD!

Because there are two lips on the panel? One lip behind the seat, and the other in front of the deck lid.

The first time I tried turtle pie I thought it was going to be a pie made with turtle meat. I felt so dumb when it turned out to be a dessert.
