I enjoyed the Pileup. The last time for me was 2009. Fortunately, I have good photos from
that event but the one memory that stands out still leaves a bad taste with me. I arrived
early (as a spectator) and posted myself at the gate to catch and photograph cars coming
in without beer bellys and bubble butts in the way. The parking lot filled quickly, as did
the two entrance roads leading to the gate and movement was slow. About noon, after
sitting in line for who knows how long one old fellow was turned away because his '65
Valiant was too stock. "Go home, get some striping or rims and come back. Can't let you in".
I thought, "Man, that sucks". A short time later a guy rolls up and he too was turned away.
His crime, a rear chrome chain license frame. Otherwise, his car was right on.

Okay, I'm hip, there were rules. But if you guys were going to be so hard core you should
have had a couple of members walking down those two lanes, letting guys know that they
weren't welcome. I'm glad there were no 5.0 Fox bodied Mustangs, IROC Camaros or
'71 454 Monte Carlos on the premises, but sometimes a promoter (or in this case, a club)
can take things too far. You guys took things too far. Wrought iron spider webs were good,
a chain frame was not? Events-wise, bigger is not always better.

Well hopefully the Melt down crew will be at next years event racing their cars and having fun. Which brings up the question , how many of you will continue to bring your cars and join them? And if you are coming , what are you bringing and what are you doing this winter to improve or finish your rides? Pictures, tech and SMACK TALK are highly recommended! Day job has me working out of town till first of the year but I will get started on up grading my 64 Marauder for the pie contest and fallout and I will be at the new event to support the track and the event .Hopefully the new event will stay true to the meltdown roots and rules. To be truth full I was disappointed that the bigger dog AA gassers and dragsters where starting to dominate a lot of the track time and a lot of the old school survivor cars where no longer present at the event. I know the big long smoky burn outs fill the stands and I enjoy them to. I just enjoy watching Back yard guys like James, Jackson, Norb and yes Scott too lol, and all the other guys because it reminds me of the way it was when I started back in 71 at Union Grove before all the Pro comp and Super comp cars started dominateing the programs and the weekend warrior's started going back to the garage and forgotten Mine got sold in the early 80's and was restored to stock ! Jackson. The only way a blown hemi can be a mess is if you make it blow chow all over the track! I would advise against that, they really, really, REALLY hate it when you do that! lol Larry

I had thought about going next year as I understood the guidelines were going to get tightened up, now I’ll just wait and see what changes come about.

It's like the I44 vs I70 battle,or the Southwest vs Central State, has to be the best fun I have ever had. :)
It takes me about 2 1/2 hours to get to Jackson's, then it's 5 miles to the track, lucky guy.
You know I loaned him some gears so he could kick my ass like he should. ;)
Now it will be Dragster vs Dragster the gloves are coming off.

Hopefully, the changes are minimal to none. Wasn't The Meltdown already the biggest event of the year for Byron Dragway? Even bigger than the wheel standing contest? Wasn't The Meltdown already stretching the capacity of the dragstrip to it's limit? If so, why change it? How many other events at Byron attract participants from as far away The Meltdown did?

If the strip wants an event to bring in cars from 1967 or newer.....How about having a separate event just for 1967 and newer drag cars, trucks, bikes, etc.

I am planning to be at the "Glory Days" meet, racing my 55. I'll see how things go when the criteria for the new drag meet are released, and then see how the meet itself goes, next July.

Definitely will be going the Uncle Sam's. Already have new rear springs for my 55, and will be ordering a set of Cal Tracs, very soon. Would like to go to The Fallout, as well.

I acquired this car back at the first of the year.
Bud Smith (RIP), retired from California to central Mo. back in 2001 and some how found my shop and commissioned me to bend the tubing for this car, as he used to run one back in the days.
I have crewed for Bud on this car and also have driven the car when it had a stack injected small block.
After his passing the end of last year, I helped his widow with the sales of his other car ( R.E.D. ) and his parts.
I am truly grateful that the family gave me the opportunity to purchase this car.
Truth be told, I wish I was still helping Bud race this car.

Just ran across this flyer. Haven't found any criteria list, though. However, the flyer mentions "All 1966 and older", and "A continuation of The Meltdown Drags". Things sound encouraging, so far.....

Is everyone just going to not go and let the event die? Is anyone planning to go and support Byron?

I’m going as a spectator. Cool old track and there will still be old cars there.

Same venue, same track, same weekend, different name shouldn't make any difference!

  28. The Meltdown drags association who created, promoted, and ran the event are not affiliated with the new event. How different it will be is something only time will tell. I'm sure the name won't be the only difference.

<--------If they push the criteria to include 1967 i'd be there. The meltdown guys put on a good show, too bad. Hopefully everyone supports the track and shows up, If it's another pro-street event, that kills the mood...
