Looks good and as long as you like it it don't matter what anyone else thinks.
The firt rule about hot rods is there are no rules. There are only rules if you are a restorer.

The first car I built was a VW. 64 pan, 56 body, flaired fenders, Porsche 1600S Motor.

I keep looking for another 56 Body so I can recreate that car. As a matter mof fact, later this weekend, I may get the fenders and deck lid back from the guy who has had them for over 30 years. More of an incentive to find another body. Only difference will be not to paint it Nottingham Green. I painted the car ans less than a week later it got TOTALED.

I may be off base but the VW is like the Model T's and A's of the 60/70 and 80's.

as far as paint gos im not sure yet,i was thinking of just red oxiding it but i think that will ruin it,but there is a colour i like its a mix between green and grey its pretty cool i will post some pics of it later.

thats marty smiths car, that is a big influence on my build but im not trying to copy it!there are quite a few that i have taken ideas from then put them in my car,the seats are going to be aluminium kirkey race seats but with the high back cut down to resemble a bomber seat.

I dont care what some say...I love the car. The chop looks great.

  8. Man, your car is way-cool!

I've thought of suggesting to my own kids (when they get older) that they build something like that for a first hot rod.

I think it's cool for a teenager ito get involved in cars. When I was 16 all I could afford was a 62 4 dr Falcon. Did my damnedest to make it cool. Big n littles raised the rear, new paint, bucket seats, floor shift, raceing stripe, shit like that. Keep it up, I like the car, I've owned a few bugs in the last 35 yrs.

  10. Hell, I think it's cool, but I'm just a FNG here...

LOVE the straight axle swap on the black car!

How about flipping the transaxle and putting a PRV V6 where Ferdinand thought the back seat should be? Maybe with an Eaton supercharger on top? It'd look like a baby Fuel Hemi!

    Way to start young!

  12. yeah, I'd say that car would be welcome around here anyday IMHO. I think that some of the VW threads that start up around here get shot down a little early. I say that because a lot of what the closet vw guys around here are trying to do is way over the head of a lot of the vw groups, and I think they are looking for a "hot rodder" opinion rather than a "vw guy opinion" Having got my start in VW's and still having a patina'd old '58 for bombing around town I can say that I have way more respect for the opinions and craftsmanship on this board than I do on any VW board, and quite frankly there isn't another board where somone could go to get the kind of creative input and help on chopping, slicing, spliceing, channeling, etc. no matter what kind of vehicle it is. So I think when a member pops up on here with some VW talk it should get taken for what it is, yeah if the guy is talking about Cal look this, Empi that he should probably be elsewhere, if he's chopping a car, or build a VW bodied modified, then maybe he should be allowed to fly under the radar a bit. I mean heck Roth used VW part for his creations, Kent Fuller builder of the Greer-Black-Prudhomme dragster which is considered by many one of the most beautiful dragsters of all time he built a VW based car too.

Some of these older guys are gonna shoot you down, but I think it's a cool f***in' car!! My first car was a '74 Super Beetle, and I still miss that damn thing. There's a guy I know that has an "odd rod"...it's a 60's beetle, w/ the top cut off and a '32 grill shell. It get's mistaken for an A(not by rodders) all the time, and it's a sweet ride...Keep up the good work. I wanna see more progress on this thing as it goes along.

Looks great, keep up the good work. Looks a lot better than a Honda with a 4 inch pipe and a dragon sticker down the side.just dont put iron crosses and skulls and spider webs all over it. but it is your car,do what you want. welcome to the hamb, the best site on the web to learn something, from history to tech.

i know ryan doesn't like vw's and there are alot of other guys that like to rip them apart here but really tell me WHY. they are cool fun little cars that can be built on a budget and are perfect for the younger crowd with little cash.

i've seen threads about anglia's, topolina's, volvo's,etc go well. if you know anything about avw you know that they are barebones little hotrods with little work. small, easily made fast. cool body style. i could post tons of pics of restocustom vw's that would probably get alot of guys gears turning n their head. and not just the ones that are into them already. they were my first love car wise. i'm building a '63 now. just cut a ragtop clip from a '58 for it. with todays gas situation why not build one to tool around in. i can build a cool old car for a few grand and still enjoy 30+ mpg. makes good sense to me.

as for the flat 4 being the downside of the VW(forget who said that). are you kidding me? i built a 2110 for my old '72 in highschool and that thing would smoke most anything. hell my '58 with a 1776 singleport with dual kadrons was a mustang/camaro eater and got 30 mpg all day long. so please don't waste the time doing an always ugly v8 conversion. the flat 4 has plenty of power to be had. i'm all about building bigger single port motors because of their torque. going dual port was a vw mistake. the 1600sp in my '63 will be built to a 1776 or maybe 1835 sp. there has even been some talk of a 1914sp just to see what it'll do.

i hope ryan leaves this up. yes it is off topic but still kind of on topic. it's a young kid building an old car. kudos to him and he deserves props if for no other reason than he isn't building another ricer. yes there are vw specific boards. lots of the. they are THE PEOPLES CAR. if you want to take that approach there are boards for just about every specific car so it's an open market. i've always loved the hamb for it's diversity. and i'll throa an invite to anyone who doesn't like vw's. come on down. i'll take you for a spin in my '63, 5 inch narrowed beam sitting about 3 inches off the ground simple plain fun car. i won't post a pic because that'll probably be the thread killer. but smoothies, whitewalls(portas), white interior are all things that flow in here with our other beloved cars. it just might changes your mind on them.

i'm not a closet vw guy. i rank them right up there with all other car obsessions if not higher than most. there's alot of guys here that know how fun they are and alot that currently own them. i know i've had pm's from several about it. thats all i'm saying is yes i know they don't fit the main deff of the board but they fit the loosened version that alot of other cars fit in here under...ken....

Also, a VW is one of the hardest cars to chop and come out looking good.
    Yours looks great!
There are plenty of posts on the HAMB about ugly cars from Ebay that don't get shut down. This is more OT than 1/2 the board!
    Keep up the good work.

Here some examples I dug up. The first one of the VW hot rods I saw was Fred Hildagos down at Muroc in 98 or 99. It was a very cool ride, seems like it started the trend. Anyway here are a couple of pics.

Every time I fill up I think about builiding either

    ( a.) an old bug
    ( b.) a Datsun 510
( c.) a mini cooper (an old one)
( d.) a dirty bomb to leave in the executive washroom at Exxon headquarters.

  20. 31Hillard, people do get ripped, but only the ones we dont like! Hahaha! As others have said, this aint the place for a VW, but I think you belong here anyways. You've got yer head screwed on right, congrats on the SoCal Bug, look, listen and learn.... and welcome.

First of all, I think 31 hillard is a cool kid for doing it himself, especially that chop. When I think of what I was doing at 17, I'd say you are WAY ahead of the pack, little brother.

I'm not bagging on you personally, but here's what fucks with my sense of the correct with regard to the so-cal look bugs:

They look cool chopped and have some great body lines. They look nice from the back, very functional and mechanical with the engine and suspension sticking out a little, single pipe raked up, etc.

But the front end, without fenders, looks like a big fat limp dick! Or maybe Squidward from the Spongebob Squarepants cartoons. Especially with the suspension way out front like that. I really want to like these as hot rods, but I just can't get around that sagging, phallic front end!!

I'd like to see someone cut the whole front completely off, and replace it with framerails, a late 30's grill shell and hood sides, and a front mounted engine!!

If i may make a suggestion, ditch the chrome cooling hardware. The chrome reflects heat instead of disapating it and will cause the motor to run warm.

Oh, and great job on the Chop. I was going to attemt one, but lost my work facility before I had the chance. Keep up the good work.

Three pages of people saying, "you're going to catch some heat but I like it anyway." So far only one guy who dislikes it, and he even started his post with a compliment. Kind of funny.

I guess I'll continue the trend. Nice work, especially for a sixteen year old. I like VW's if they are done up right and it looks like yours is on the right track.

My buddy is building a dune buggy with a v-dub engine; he is setting it up to pull wheelies. It will be pretty trick when it's done.

    Keep up the good work.

  24. i agree. my 63 had a 2332 with 48ida's 12.80 1/4 times with stock gearing. this was my daily ride for 5 years. i drove it everywhere. a big heavy v/8 conversion is a waste of time. build a stroked vw engine and turbo it. unbelieveable power.

there was a black one in dewey built along the same lines. it was cool as hell. maybe someone out there has some pics they can post for you. welcome to the H.A.M.B. and remember the only thing that matters when you build your rod is thAt you are happy. someone doesn't like it screw em until they pay for it.

  26. We all have to start somewhere. My first 5 cars were Vdubs- bajas, slammed and rabbits. You have done alot of nice work, keep it up. Eventually, you will learn that a V8 is alot cheeper to build than an air cooled even with the high insurance and last alot longer. But in the back of your head, you will never be able to excape the lure of a vdub, no mater what you end up driving. I almost bought a baja the other day, but had to slap myself in the back of the head to knock some since back into me. Nice work and good luck.

VW's rock my dome. My last car was a Bahama Blue 66 with a 2276 w/IDA's. Car ran 12.88 at 104 mph. It was a fun fast clean little Cal-Look car. Good luck with yours and keep us posted on it....

Ever since I saw one of those with the dropped axle and Ford wire wheels I've had a version rolling around in my head. Mine would have flathead mounted in front with zoomies coming out from under the hood, box tube frame, a shortened A pickup box stuck in the back to hold the radiator and a 5 speed and shortened tube banjo rear. If bucks were not an issue it would have a QC mounted under an A rear spring. I don't think I'd chop the top but who knows it might need it. In other words a traditional hot rod A chassis with a VW body. Dreaming is fun.
