I just bought a 1953 Mercury Monterey 2 door. Original color is India black over Yosemite yellow. It’s bone stock, but I’m told the flathead has been recently rebuilt and it’s got three on the tree My plans are to get it running and driving, then upgrade the brakes, maybe the rear axle, redo the interior and then body and paint. It’s going the need a couple patch panels, but fortunately it cam with extra front fenders, bumpers, hood, and trunk lid.

Cool! Like it! Plenty of work to do but you got way more than me to start with. Enjoy.

Merc stuff can be hard to find, good things is a lot of Ford stuff will fit and pretty sure you can find some new patch panels.. If you are planning on upgrading some of the littles I would be interested in yours.

When I started messing with the engine on my Mercury, I found it was locked solid. After trying several unsticking tricks, I pulled the left head and found rust in number 6 hole. I broke it free with a block of wood, honed the cylinder and installed a new head gasket. I primed the carb today and gave it a spind. It started and ran for a few seconds! I need to buy a new carb. I think I’ll go with the 9 Super 7 that Speedway sells.

If the car has been sitting a while before you got it the gas tank and lines are probably full of varnish and gunk unleaded gas is especially bad because of the ethanol. The Carb you have is EZ to kit so you may not need a new one and it matches up to your Load-O-Matic distributor. Some radiator shops can boil out the gas tank but it's better to replace the lines from the tank all the way up. I would open your Carb up and see what it looks like inside.

I agree with what Jeff said there are companies out there that sell kits.Daytona carb is one there are others the main concern would be the throttle shaft wear but they can be bushed.as Jeff said a simple carb to rebuild.that was made to work with the distributor.if you can get it to run with clean gas and a quick clean of inside may surprise you. good luck hopefully you can figure out the pic posting.

The throttle shaft is worn really bad and the cast iron base is cracked at the base mount. Oh, and it’s ‘48-‘51 truck carb, so the oilbath air cleaner won’t mount up to the top. It’s got to go! And fortunately the previous owner pulled the gas tank out and left it in the truck, half the work is already done!

A good core can be bought cheap. A quick rebuild and you would have the right carb for your Load O.

Well apparently the Mercury came with a Holley 1901-FF carburetor, also known as the Tea Pot. They have a four bolt square baseplate, which means a 94 or 97 don’t bolt up, so I’ll have to pick up an intake manifold too.

It’s got a 94 from a 1948-1951 Ford truck carb. The previous hack drilled the manifold for the three bolt carb, but he did such a good job that the holes were too wide and when he bolted the 94 up, the base cracked. That’s why I’m just going to switch to a stock Ford intake manifold.

Oops. That was my blonde moment. It slipped my mind that it was a '53.
