so i been wonderin' if anyone has seen any '60's style kustoms with tall shifters?is there a certian year that a tall shifter wouldn't be cool? like a cut off year,like'57??? would a '62 pontiac wagon look GAY with a tall shifter???i have pondered this for a few months now..personaly i haven't seen one in a '60's car..is it taboo....i been lookin' on the 'net and cant seem to find any [IMG] lemme know fellas,,,,,,thanks .....craig

  2. Who cares..if you like it run it!

I run a tall shifter in my mild custom....quite frankly sick of it...gonna change to a fast short stick again...

    Do what you wanna man!

    cheers

  3. Tough one. If the rest of the car is styled appropriatly I'm sure it will look great...

I agree, if you like it then run it. Here's mine on my 59 ford. Not too tall just enough. The top of the top hat on the skull is level with the dash.

Personally I think 59Ford's shifter is about the max. Any more and its up in the gay territory. Really tall is fitting for a rod with crazy pipes, crazy fuel system etc, even whack-o rods built through the mid 60s , but in a wagon it seems something the size of the Hurst Indy shifter would be spot on, fitting with the overall feel of the car...

I had a pretty tall one in my 63 Chev pickup, I cut the top 8" off and welded a tire iron on it was pretty cool lookin if I do say so myself.

  11. if you like it run it, theres no rules to this game. here's a brief history. the tall shifters came from lasalles. the stock shifter on lasalle was real tall. the lasalle trans mission was thought to be the strongest trans to run in the 40's to about the mid fifties. so when everyone saw your tall shiter they knew you where runnin' the real deal. people would swap long shifters on to other transmission to make people think they were running a lasalle. later it became popular to install a cool shift knob like a skull or shrunken head so that when you had it in low gear the shift knob would be looking out of the winshield.

yeah, tall shifters kickass. mine is level with the top of the dash, but i'm going to extend it so it's taller than the dash. like everyone else, do what you want. if you like it, then go for it.

I was thinking of going taller also. You get alot of weird looks with the tall shifters. Especialy from all the yuppie fags in there BMW's and crap. As long as you don't race( very long throw), it shouldn't be a problem.

  18. cut a hole int the roof of the wagon and have it sticking up super high! I would get a tall shifter if my car didn't have a colum shift

  19. I've always wanted to run a tall shifter too, but the interior space is pretty tight in my car. Every time I shifted into 4th, I'd knock my passenger in the head!

I think if it was a 4 speed I wouldn't go any higher than maybe... center of the dash. Otherwise it's gotta be tall.

I think I'll fab up a 4 foot shifter for my 3 on the tree [IMG]

    LMAO!!

    THATS some funny shit!

A lil O/T here.. reminds me of my old Toyota mini truck.. sometimes, when I would get a "lil" over zealous in throwing the shifter from 2 to 3 my hand would slip and I would end up punching my CD player!!

    Good times!
