  1. KOOL MAN ! At least its not a honda civic bouncing off the bump stops on 18" rims that cost more than some of our whole rides. Keep up the progress

Yeah I have to admit at least the guys that are buildin these things are buildin cars that are somewhat classic...and they are putting a lot of work into them. Better than the kids that are bolting on body kits and neon lights.

...anyway...I actually like some of these.

...here is a cool lookin' roadster pickup.

...this one is pretty slick too.

Hey Hillard nice work on the V-dub, you should be proud. You’ve also stirred up quite a reaction with your intro, you should be proud of that too. I haven’t seen this much commotion in a long time, I love it. Welcome aboard.

I love a well chopped VW but rarely see a good one, I mean a REALLY good one and I've seen a lot of chopped Beetles in my time. Dale's has got to be if not the smoothest one, definately in the top three! The lines on his roof are perfect. Man, that thing just flows for hours... Great job and keep the pix coming.

    1) This isn't a VW board.

    2) If you go back and search those locked VW posts you should find they were about attitude.

    3) We sometimes let the odd thing slip by because well, cool is cool - and 31hillard and his car seem to be just that... take note that he is assuming nothing.

    4) If this reply starts an avalanche of VW posts because it was somehow misconstrued as an invitation to such posts - I'm locking every damn one of them. :)

Pretty cool car man. Good luck with it.

  7. definitely cool.. i've been checking out so-cal style vw's for a while.. definitely a cool little project..

i'd even say i't do one some day but i have more pre-war projects than i'll ever get around to at this point..

  8. Hey Hillard, you're going to have a hard time hooking up the linkage with the carbs on backwards!!! (I think I took the same mock up pic of my 1641 with Kad's on it when i was your age)

i am with this guy on this one. what were you doing when you were 16. how many hambers owned, drove, or rode in a vw. remember the 60's. give the kid a break and accept the fact that he is trying to enjoy the automotive hobby just like yourself.

Anybody remember Tom Medley's VolksRod project in R&C in the 60's? Dode Martin (Dragmaster) also built a VolksRod. Tom's car was based on a Kent Fuller frame, Bruce Crower built one using the Dragmaster frame and a hot 356 motor.

  15. you have got to get it running (if legal ish) for Cleethorpes. That run is shaping up to be a blast, the town is just set up for a cruise circuit and the hot hatch boys think they own the place (but are mostly really nice kids). at the pre 49 weekend last year there was only 22 cars and we stopped the town twice just by driving through it........I split off (and had to do shopping stuff with "she who must be obeyed") and spent the hour and a half she spent shopping talking to various people in the car park about rods, even a whole bunch of maxipants boys (a couple of their cars were reeeeally big money like £15k in the engine alone!!) who followed me in and wanted to know where the rod show was

That's not it at all Hillard, Your volksrod looks like it will be a cool ass car when it is finished and ALOT of us have owned vw cars for the same reason you have yours .I had a 73 super with dual delortos blah blah , But, this is a traditional hotrod and custom car sight .Don't get caught up in manufactured drama .Ryan has even posted his opinion on how this is NOT a vw sight . That should be the final word .swaZZie

i dont think i could get it running for then plus i would have to get everything on the chassis ready, brakes, fuel lines, cables etc,i wanted to just blast it around the show field but dad said that wouldnt be possible.but i suppose i will have to see when it gets a bit closer.and what if i got pulled up? the car would be completly illegal!i dont think its worth it really do you?

I think its great you first car is going to be Hot Rod inspired. Is it traditional, no but neither are 4 doors or wagons and we let them on here.... Its being done in the fashion of a Traditional car and I think its coming along nice.

Keep up the good work, and be proud of what you are building....

yes im not bothered if someone dont like my car,its my car not theres.

  21. Killer looking chop! Anytime someone can pull off a great looking chop on an old eggshell shape like a Beetle or Studebaker P/U, I'm impressed.

And IMHO, it's at least as traditional as something with a TPI small block, 700R4 and S-10 frame (or M II or Nova clip).

But, opinions are like assholes... nobody (unless they're really kinky or something) wants to be around everyone else airing theirs.

"i didnt do the doors!i bought it with doors done.so i dont know.i will keep posting with my progress if thats ok."

So what exactly are you taking credit for on the build? A lot of guys have said you have done a great job on the chop. Did YOU do the chop? Did YOU do the side opening bonnet? Have YOU done the sheet metal work? Or are you helping someone else do it? Did you buy it with the chop done - like the doors?

It's a great looking car...and it's very cool to see someone so young working on their first ride before they even have a license! It'll help you to know far more about your car than the average 17 year old pedal pusher and wheel turner does, and you'll be able to drive around proudly in a unique vehicle that has a lot of your character in it!

Kudos to ya...and keep at it!!!:)

    Comments like What????

I asked a few questions. There were no comments.

    However, here's one.

In the future I would recommend that you make sure that people know exactly what work you have done, when they are encouraging you in your work, rather than letting them believe that you are responsible for work that others did. You seem to be reading every reply, so it's unlikely you didn't see this..

"Killer looking chop! Anytime someone can pull off a great looking chop on an old eggshell shape like a Beetle or Studebaker P/U, I'm impressed."

    And this...

"Nice chop, thats not so easy with that roof line"

    or...

"Also, a VW is one of the hardest cars to chop and come out looking good.
    Yours looks great!"

And this one leaves no doubt...

"First of all, I think 31 hillard is a cool kid for doing it himself, especially that chop.."

Please be honest in the future and give credit where it's due. All you have to say is that you didn't do the original chop, but you had to clean up the finish work that was roughed in. It won't lessen the accomplishment of your work.
It will increase your stature in other's eyes.

I went back and reread his posts, I guess I missed the part where he said he bought it like that. My mistake, didn't mean to confuse anyone.
