I scored a deal today from a co-worker. I got an Edelbrock EPS Performer intake and the Edelbrock 1405 carb for what I hope is a sweet price. Now, I know from searching the web that this Edelbrock is a 600 CFM carb. I have an '86 stock 305 chev engine that had a Rochester QuadraJet on it. Are the carbs close in similarity? Is the Edelbrock going to be too much carb for the 305? Never had any experience with 4 bbls...only 2 bbls. Thnx.
Fuel mileage will be ****, but it won’t be too much per say. What I will say is I recently swapped a guy a 480cfm carb I had on my 390 for the 600cfm edelbrock he had on his 302 because he was in the single digits for the mpg in his OT truck (197? F100). I would expect a similar situation here.
I'm pulling the original '54 268 cubic inch straight 8 from my car (in the avitar) and putting in the 305. Roughly 5500 pounds so I'm betting milage won't be the 17 mpg I was getting before the knock started.
Properly tuned either will work. I’ve used a number of 1400 series eddy’s. But if you can find someone who knows how to tune the Qjet, that’s about as good as you’ll get on a street motor.
I'd keep the Q-Jet. If not, I'd run a Edelbrock 1403. I ran one on my mildly cammed 305, for years, and got 23mpg average, combined city and freeway. Granted, the car was 2300lbs.
You can dial the Edelbrock in with one of their kits that has the jets and metering rods. You're going to be on the primary circuit 99% of the time, so it will be fine. If you have a Quadrajet, remove it and throw it into the garbage immediately.
Another plus for the Q-jet!!! Get a A/F monitor and dial it in. Part throttle adjustability is as simple as turning a screw.
