Technical Advice Appreciated/Question about Front Split Wishbone Slop at Rod Ends

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by anothercarguy, Jan 1, 2019.

  1. Just finished splitting the front wishbones and welding in the threaded bungs for our '38 Ford cabriolet project. I used the following Speedway threaded bungs and rod ends.

    https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Steel-Tube-Ends-Weld-Bung-for-1-Inch-I-D-Tube-11-16-18-RH,33798.html

    https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Spee...End-11-16-18-RH-Thread-Zinc-Plated,60383.html

Now the issue...and the what have you done or what would you do part of the post. When the rod end is threaded in the bung, the thread is very sloppy loose. With the rod end threaded all the way in (with enough room for the jam nut plus about 1/4" of thread outside the bung for adjustment), without the jam nut tight, I can wiggle the rod end up and down/side to side almost an 1/8". Of course, the jam nut will tighten and take that slop out, but I don't like knowing how much slop is there, especially considering this is a suspension component!

I've been thinking about slitting the length of the bung and the first inch of the wishbone in order to tighten it up and then re-welding it together and then chasing the threads with a tap.

I'm thinking that I'll also contact the Speedway tech line tomorrow to discuss the issue.

Has anyone else come across this and if so, what was your fix/solution?

  2. And further, I tried threading in an 11/16" RH threaded tie rod end. It too had slop, although perhaps not quite as much. I measured the diameter of the threaded rod end and it came it about .0075" under 11/16" and the jam nut threads feel about right, so I'm pretty sure the issue lies with the threaded bung.

It sounds like the bushed rod end is poorly manufactured, but the bung is down right horrible.

  4. i wonder if you received a 3/4" bung instead of a 11/16" ?

The 3/4" are 16 TPI. Would the rod end even screw in at all?

  6. the drill size for 3/4-16 is 11/16" , so my theory does not hold water

If you have some digital calipers, check the ID of the threads in the bung.

  8. Thanks for responses so far...after measuring the bung and rod ends, I have some quantifiable data:

Threaded bung = .645" (drill bit size for 11/16" fine thread should be .625...so it's too large).
Rod end = .680" (about .0075" too small)

Combined = really ****py sloppy fit! Very disappointed as the ratings for these items on the Speedway website were 4.5-5 stars (very high).

Still looking for any suggestions...about to call Speedway tech line.

Defiantly bad parts from Speedway, but that's not a surprise.

  10. So...to close the bracket after discussion with the Speedway tech line, they checked the parts they currently have on their shelves and found that they too are loose fitting. They measured the inside bung diameter and found it to be about .650" (.005" larger than the ones I have (mine may have shrunk after welding)). They deemed that this is within the tolerance that they accept (and the tech says he uses these all the time and that amount of play would not bother him). They did however agree to send my money back.

I'll cut these out and spend some time on the lathe (should have done that in the first place!).

Howabout you drill and tap those for 3/4" joints? And use some good joints.

  12. Good thinking! I was too close looking at the trees, missed the forest!

I would call them Speedway tolerances, downright intolerable!
