Man, those volks rods are GAY...

I could give a fuck what all you guys say and how young the guy is. there are tons of places on the interweb to talk about thses natzi boxes where people will get all hot & bothered the right way, but this aint the place to post your abortions.

My first car at 14 was a VW and I would have never hacked it up to make it look like a bastard wanna-be traditonal hot rod...

I agree with FOMOCO, at least the coupe with the stupid suicide shifter was an American car. Volksrods are stupid. I'm glad you're 16, I wish I was but I'm not and that car is gay.

Not that anybody asked me, but in my newbie opinion, the volkswagen crowd would be better served posting somewhere else. I think allowing them to post in here is a distraction.

That said, if Ryan is cool with it, then that's all that matters. I don't have to look or I can go read another forum if I don't like it.

Same thing could be said of skateboard/BMX/music/Ebay/motorsickles/tatoos/whatever posts on the HAMB.
In the end, It's what Ryan says that goes.

I learned about auto body, front end narrowing, lowering, shaving, and custom fabrication on pre-59 VW's. I did'nt realize i was training myself for the rest of my life in AND out of my garage. Almost nobody can afford old American metal when they're a teenager. I know they aren't suppossed to be on here, but you can't deny what a good basis for a practice hot rod a VW is.
That bug is kickin and it all feels the same when your finally haulin ass in it, whether its a model A or an oval with the semaphores flappin in the wind.

it's a cool car man, don't let the haters get you down. I made fun of those VWs for years until i drove one, I had a blast! Finsh it up nice, and build something more HAMB-friendly. Either way, your car is way cooler than a Civic, you'll look like a rock star driving to high school, and you won't get your ass kicked at the pump like the rest of us do.

Strange isnt it when you go back and look at the old drag racing photos that there are VWs everywhere. Considering 1/4 mile racing was one of the drivers for developing "hot rods" and a lot of these VWs wasted lots of flattie powered fords I am at a loss how some folks can consider cars like this one to be anything but a rod. If indeed this place is purely for "Ol Skool" why is it acceptable to use late model parts in some of the more "strenuous" members cars. Personally I have a calender and can see its 2006. Whether owned by a 17 year old or a 77 year old something that is chopped and worked like this is a rod, but then thats just my opinion.

  18. This guy seems cool, seems like he put a lot of work in it and seems like he's okay listening to anyone's honest opinion about his car, so I owe it to you:

If I saw your car on the street or in a show, I would laugh my ass off. I hate it.

Work on something else man, you have the ability to make something else look really cool.

Really? Everywhere? What class did they race in? How old are the pictures you're looking at? I can recall ONE VW drag car featured in Hot Rod magazine up to '64. It had a Chevrolet motor. And if someone built one to look like it, it would probably be accepted here.

*******"Considering 1/4 mile racing was one of the drivers for developing "hot rods" and a lot of these VWs wasted lots of flattie powered fords I am at a loss how some folks can consider cars like this one to be anything but a rod."

It's easy to make a declaration like this...how about some pictures to back it up? In what classes were the VWs put up against flathead Fords? Keep in mind that we are talking 50s and EARLY 60s. Not EMPI era. POST PICTURES!

*******"If indeed this place is purely for "Ol Skool" why is it acceptable to use late model parts in some of the more "strenuous" members cars."

It's NOT purely for "Ol Skool"!!!!! It's for TRADITIONAL RODS and CUSTOMS. Using a late model part that can be integrated into a TRADITIONAL ROD or CUSTOM without being noticed (like in a safety feature) is not the same as using a body. If you say that a VW in the style of the one that started this thread is traditional, post pictures from the 50s and EARLY 60s to back it up. Post pictures of YOUR VW that you had back then.

*******"Personally I have a calender and can see its 2006."

Yes it is. That has nothing to do with anything.

*******"Whether owned by a 17 year old or a 77 year old something that is chopped and worked like this is a rod, but then thats just my opinion."

So, a '62 Impala that is chopped and worked like this is a rod? No fenders...wire wheels..

I am personally happy that you are only 16 and have a car project, believe me I think that is great. I think the problem most have with your car on this board is that it doesn't belong here. It doesn't make it a bad car, but is certainly can't be passed as a traditional rod or custom by any stretch of the imagination.

Its not a "I support your vw" issue at all. Even though your vw had been chopped and features a hot rod inspired look, it in no way is a traditional hot rod. And thats why we(or at least I) love the Hamb. It is a place for traditional rod & customs, and, sorry, a VW is not that.

And I am the furthest thing from a VW hater-My first car, and first car I built, was a 68 cal-look, with a 1915 and dual webers. Built it with my pops, drove it every day thru high school. Hurt alot of V8 owners feelings.

I loved the car, it taught me a ton. But it just doesn't belong here, that is the issue imo. That being said, best of luck with your project. Even though I am sure that you know about this, here is a link to a Volkrod forum:

Lots of similar projects to yours. You should by all means stay around the Hamb. Tons of great builders and experience here that you can learn from. Good luck on the car

It's customizing an old car using the methods that street rodders and customizers have used for decades. Since bugs were around then, they COULD have been done that way then, even if not many people even considered it. This type of build only fits on VW boards due to motive power, but traditional Bug guys can be as closed minded as traditional rodders. In fact, both groups seem to have members who make it a point of trying to be hateful and closed minded at times. Don't let it get you down, build what you want, and if 90% of what you're doing is from the tradtional rod school, as far as stance, build methods, etc, then use the resources here.

Is this the way to prove how much better a person you are? Did our parents teach us this sort of behavior? 'Cause that's just pathetically childish.

You got some real issues, my friend.

I like VWs that are built right, and feel no need to closet my feelings there. It's been a long while, but i've had a couple-- a '64 street race DKP (Der Kleiner Panzer's-- original "cal look" club from back in the day) styled bug and a '64 Notchback. My bug ran low 12's on the strip (82x90.5 w/ okrassa crank, carillo rods, fumio fukai heads, fk89 cam, 48 ida's,) hauled ass on the street everyday and was great fun. Just like you, VWs were the first cars I got into (I rebelled against my family, who were all traditional hot rod / custom guys, lol... and look where i ended up.)

That said, do not ruin your VW by trying to turn it into what it's not. I really wouldnt try to turn that thing into a traditional custom / hot rod-- because it can never be one. Be proud of the VW roots, and built it into an original cal look or something that fits. The chop on the car is beautiful- so go with that as a great base. Here's a couple things i'd recommend:

    1) Shiny paint is a must.
    2) Go for some old style rims like BRM
    3) Lose the cheap chrome, etc on the motor
    4) Overall, spend time to look up old DKP cars and learn the style....

    http://www.dkpcarclub.com/

Don't try to impress HAMBrs by trying to turn this car into a traditional american custom or hot rod. Be proud of what it is and shape it accordingly.

HAMB style will corrupt your build. That said, when you're thinking of your VW-- you're definately in the wrong spot.

Good luck with it. Email me at notebooms at yahoo.com to keep in touch with pics, questions, etc. I'm into it...

And this is why these posts almost always get closed.

If you've got a piece of tech that applies to traditional hot rods and customs (like setting up the front end or chopping that top) we're all ears. And if you need help with something like bearing numbers for adding F100 brakes to the front of it, we're here to help - that stuff is already in Tech-o-matic.

    BUT. You said it yourself

I don't think anyone could argue that we are pretty damn tolerant for a place that is dedicated to traditional hot rods ans customs. Like I said before - cool is cool. But this has gotten out of hand. This type of thing really belongs over at samba. Even if it is copying the traditional hot rod style... and it certainly is.
