Has anyone seen it back in the day or have pictures of the 1963 z-11 engine in the Malcoms Chevelle?

Was it based of the W engine or new NASCAR Mark II ?

Malcolm's shop was not far from the house I grew up in. As kids we hung around his place from time to time but I didn't really get to meet him until much later.

The Z11 [427] engine looked like a "W" [348/409] engine but not sure how much, if anything interchanged..The "Mystery 427" was the predecessor to the 396 [basically]

I believe the first engine in the 64 was the Z 11 out of his 63.
Not real sure what engine he used when he went with the 65 front end, as he was running a stack injector and running on Nitro.
I tried to zoom in on the header flange, but it;s not clear enough to make out.

I can only imagine the bullshiting going on with these guys. Must've been epic. I remember Malcom, Henry Butler, Malcoms' son and a bunch of us waiting out a rain in Malcoms'(?) trailer. You could've written book with all that material.

  9. There is a video called The Golden Era of NASCAR:Wendell Scott on youtube, good stuff. I'd post it but it's almost an hour long.

Here is the car you are referring to. Sorry, no engine pics, but as I recall the Z-11 427 "W" block is what this car had in it. The car was primarily a match racer and the engine was set back approx. 8" for better weight transfer. The second pic shows the car at Indy classified in A/Gas for that reason.

Not to go to far afield here, but I always thought the '65 car was an original Z16 car. Some cool pics in this thread.

I believe Malcolm used the "W" Z-11 in the '64 season and a modified 396 block and heads in the '65 season. I am not aware of anyone using a Mystery Motor for drag racing. The very few engines that were built in 1963 stayed with NASCAR teams I believe.

Frank, there is an article on the hot rod engine tech website that quotes one of the engineers saying the son of another engineer did put one of the Mark II engines in a car and drag raced with it. Obviously not a famous car, and this many years later who knows.... If I could figure out how to post a link, I would, but the canadian poncho thread linked above by carcruse has a link to it.

Wow Thank You cool pictures, Read that the engine came out of his 63, so wraymen's 1st picture should confirm it was a W engine. Still would be cool to see a picture of it in the 64 with engine set back ect. Hood scoop in Oldracer's picture makes me wonder if its running only one carburetor and 1st time I noticed the long header collectors:rolleyes:

Salty, you have not told us where that dumpster is yet , and we are really worried you will wake up some morning and can't remember, like you know, when you hide your own Easter Eggs. :D

There it is :):cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool: Thanks suchadrag. In 1971 at 17 years old I tried to put a 348 with a 3 speed into my 1st 64 Chevelle and remember the oil pan resting on cross member and motor mounts not even close:oops: , Didn't have the tools or the knowledge then so gave up and kept the 283, 64 years old now and working on assembling this one, it has a small block now, but thinking about Malcoms car every now and then. 20170717_115543.jpg

It might be two different 64s, or the light reflecting the quarter window glass has a wide chrome strip that looks like a post in your 1st night time picture and shows up as a hardtop in above 3rd.

I had also read some where that rather than cut up a new 65 he changed front clip. 1964 to 1965 moved the back up lights to the rear bumper and different tail lights. The tail lights in loudbangs picture of the 65 appear correct and there are SS badges on the rear quarters. Did he cut up a new z-11 ? senior moment, meant Z-16

I am sure the '65 car was not one of the Z-16s.
