Tony, I am curious. What would you do to make a 39 tub your own? I mean what kind of modifications from stock would you make?

Very Few. I prefer most of the '40 front end details over the '39; my current favorite is a '40 Standard front end with a chrome grille and DeLuxe headlight doors. I'd do that, lose the lower hood side trim, and shave the deck. When I was a kid, I knew a guy with a '39 tub on a MASSIVE rake. He had 820-16 ambulance tires on the rear, and maybe 550-16 fronts; both were wide whitewalls. I thought it looked great, but I'm too old for that extreme a treatment now. Maybe 640 and 820-15s, medium whitewalls, and lowered some at both ends (pretty much the stance I have on my convertible, but with stock wheel wells. I'd give some thought to chopping the top maybe 2-3". Refining the top shape by adjusting the bow heights and having a real expert doing the top covering is a big deal, too. Maybe black with a black top, just to add a little sinister note.
Thanks for asking; that was fun!

Thanks for your thoughts Tony! I was planning on leaving the trunk stock (with latch and license plate) but problems with finding a lock cylinder for the very art deco handle have me considering the the smooth deck option. Mine will be lower than most 39 tubs but will retain the stock trim. I have not made up my mind on the top color. The car will be black or Washington blue.

  9. Thanks, I really enjoyed restoring it with the Guildner Brothers help. It is a great car with history, it's the Milf Robbins "Oilers" tub from Carlsbad Ca.

  12. We lived together and I convinced him to do the same thing to his car as we did to My 39 tub, he agreed and there you go.

Are those hover-pods on the Cord, or just fenders?

That looks like a great car but the picture is so small that I can't see any details.

Custom 41 Mercury tub created from a two door sedan. Inspired by the old Sam Barris created Joe Urritta 1941 Ford and the Harry Bradley inspired version of that... Digital Restyled Images.

  23. Rik, thanks for posting your great work here, as I told you we use to drive down to Andrews and Evans Custom Car Lot in Burbank to see Joe Uritta's tub. Thanks for the new versions.
