Technical 700r4 wiring

    does anyone know how to wire the early model 700r4 transmissions with the 4 wire plug ? I know that there is a way without buying the kits . What parts are needed and part #'s if available...thanks

    been a long time, but what you might want is a pressure switch, screwed into the port that has pressure only in 4th gear. Wire that switch in series to the lock up solenoid. Connect this through the 4 pin plug to power that is on when the key is on.

    The kit makes it easier to find the parts, but you might be able to just rewire the stuff that's in your transmission already. They had lots of different ways to wire them internally, so we can't say without at least seeing a picture of the bottom of your transmission (with the pan and filter off, of course).
     
  3. Some models locked the converter in more than one different gear, via the computer.
    For a hot rod, all you need is a normally off 4th gear pressure sender with one pole, that grounds internally , or a two pole..One to solenoid, the other to any ground point in the pan. Also , you will need a good, functioning solenoid in the pump, and a toggle switch from a 12 v source.
    I don't know part #'s , but most of the senders will close with only about 30 psi.
    You'll have to get in there and poke around with a test light. If there's more than one sender, you can probably steal one for the 4th gear port. 4th gear port is in the back of the VB, next to the accumulator.

    thanks for replys.....talked to a guy several years ago and he tapped onto brake light switch and some kind of vacuum switch to make his work....didn't get inside transmission as I remember...any ideas of what he did...talked to at show , didn't get name so I can't go back and talk to him now....my mistake

    that set up was used on some of the lockup TH350C transmissions, before they started putting computers in cars. I think from 1979-1981 or so.

    You still really need to look inside and see what the wiring is, because they are not all wired the same.

    I had thought the guy said motor and trans was from mid 80s firebird... he said it was a 350 and 700r4 tranny.
     
  7. Doesn't really matter. it's now in a pre 66 hot rod application, right?
    No telling what's been done to it.
    Listen to Jim. You're not going to be able to do a plug and play on this one, most likely, unless you want to burn shit up..

    I have a GM shop manual for one year of 700-R4, it shows TEN different wiring diagrams, with from zero to three pressure switches, were used. That's for ONE year of tranmission! there is just no way to know what's in there unless you open it up.

    haven't got it in anything yet...just getting info on what to do when I do start build... Trans i'll be using is from '86 S-10 that had 4.3 ....I'll be using a 350 instead of the V-6

    You are going to be looking long and hard for that wiring diagram though. The 4.3 didn't come out until '88 in S10's;)

    My non computer locks up in 2 3 and 4. I have a power wire running through the brake switch and a foot switch on the floorboard. I hit the foot switch to lock it up on the highway, otherwise don't bother.
