I worked to get my car on the road from 6AM Wed. intill 2PM to get my car on the road. tossed my crap and Woman in to it And took off up the coast. It was hell going through Santa Monica traffic but when we hit Malibu things were great. I was loving life all the way through the Oxnard farms. Then we hit some Detures crossing the bridge over the river into Ventura we got a flat. I had tools to work on every thing but tires. I called AAA for a tow but they didn't come intill 630PM. A plane had crashed into a SUV causing a multiple car pile-up and all the wreckers were tied up. I was dropped off at a Motel at 730. the next morning I tried to get the dam thing fixed but no one wanted to fool with a 500X16 tube type tire. I rented a car and went to a parts store to fix it my self. which I did. I fired the flatty up and it ran good for about 2 min. and then it started to miss sputter and back fire. It Quit. by now it was about 4Pm. I called AAA and had them tow it back to El Segundo. IWe made it to Paso at 830 in a rented car. Will I ever do it again? You bet your sweet ass cuse I loved every damed minute!

I left from San Jose about 2pm for the 2 hour drive, and passed a few on the way there and back. Once I got out of Salinas the fast lane was a smooth ride. The Bay Area roads SUCK!!!!! Cruisin 80-85 mph for most of the trip in a Cadillac to Paso is the biggest thrill for me.

I caravaned there with Pat,the gold '33 highboy parked next to the shitters, and Todd, the green '37,glass car that looks like a barn find car.We met at the 405 and the 118 at 5:00.This was my first Paso, and I wanted to enjoy myself.I drove my sons '68,candy lime Impala, instead of my '49 Ford.I really wanted to bring the '49 Merc, but it's still not ready yet, bummer! The drive was great, weather was perfect, car drove fantastic. Can't wait til next year,in the Merc!!!

Lowdown Kustoms caravanned down from the High Desert, we had 7 cars this year. The drive to and from Paso is definately the highlight for us as well, had a really awesome time at the show and the Friday night cruise was a blast, can't wait until next year. I was hassled during the cruise for messing with my airbags in my 56 Buick, anyone else have any problems with that, or was it just me,

I've gone every year since '98 and only twice had my Lincoln make it... two years ago I had to tow it to Salinas, this year we had trouble but got it running and made it back safely... and those two years have been the most fun!

here are some pics on the way down and on the way back up.

    (let's try this again)

I just couldn't show up to Paso in a modern car, knowing I have a running rod or custom at home. The trip down is great, and I've DRIVEN an old car to Paso every year for the past 12 shows in a row! (1995 - 2006).

I have buddies kook me about something on my car that isn't done, something doesn't work, needs finishing, etc.
These are the same guys that show up in a rental car because their car has a "mystery noise" or the trunk won't latch-- Who cares?? Drive it!!

If you break down, at least you tried!

I just got home at 5 am friday morn. from paso. I drove a total of 4500 miles, killed 4 birds 1 rabbit and hit a dead deer. myself and 2 buddies rode out and back in the candy red and white scalloped 63 galaxie. we had a blast, you cali guys should have to drive your cars more, what memories are made on a road trip like that will never be forgotten, and isn't that what we are supposed to do is build 'em drive the wheels off them and enjoy them? any way I will post more trip details after sleep, but from kansas to cali. thru the sequia's, yosimite, over the mountain pass with 26 grade across nevada to bonneville to see the salt flats flooded, then to utah's arch's park andacross colorado. Then I get home and have 2 guys from cali here, dano and curtis. What a great life it is to be one of the newest members of the BEATNIKS!! road trips like this make great memories guys, get in those cars and DRIVE !

Drove down with some of the club as a group. No issues but dumb asses cutting us off. Drive back was just as good. Most of the fun is the DRIVE. If they break you deal with it.

    see ya on the road

I cant say enough about driving out to Paso From Austin. It was really The Kontinentals run out together. We all just got back to town 6:30PM yesterday. My '30 was a fun car to take, but next year, I am driving my '33 out unless a '40 Lincoln finds me......

Doing it with a group of friends is whats its all about.

  13. I loved that you guys drove from Austin. I talked to some guys who trailered theiy cars in from Morro Bay (30 MINUTES AWAY) because they felt the road was too bumpy. In my opinion they had no right show their cars, they did not deserve it.

we had a great drive down haulling ass all the way down. Except for the part ware we ran out of gas.oops. Than on the way back I lost a brake adjuster on a rear wheel. that sucked. a little cutting and grinding we were back on the road. Made for a extra long day. Scott

These are great. I would rather see pictures of the enroute rather than the destination. Very cool. Thank You.

  18. Hey kick ass my truck is a movie star, speaking of driving everywhere that kick ass truck in the video has 120,000 miles on it since i first built it 5 years ago and has driven from edmonton canada to bakersfield (4000 mile round trip) 3 times this year. and just for the record I had billy bobs brakes in my box which slowed me down during the race

Truly one of the most delightful things about hotrodding in NZ is the fact that they either don't know what a trailer is or have enough sense to figure that the ol ride is, first and foremost, for driving. I went to Stare's show in Christchurch a few years back and glad to see that most of the cars were driven to the show from throughout NZ, including N Island. And although the vibe was a little more street-roddish than I was used to even the pastel cars were driven from far and wide. Kiwi's don't seem to give much thought to trailering thier chit. I drove Stare's '37 from Christchurch down to Queenstown, a days ride, with a few dozen other cars and no trailers. Thats the way it should be. If you don't think your car is reliable enough to make a long haul - go anyway - cause after a few trips the bugs will work themselves out and you'll be good from there on out.

I'll be down under in Jan, with my '32, starting in Auckland and I plan on driving it down to Craig's and around to the sights (like Queenstown, Greymouth). Time to get the new top done....
