Ah man...don't bring that one up again; that story makes the baby Jesus cry
:(. Are you a shop owner that builds cars or an individual? I know as an artist, the most cash I make is on 'commission' pieces, where someone has requested something specifically. It's cool if I can sell something I just did for myself, but I can't expect to make much of living off it.
    I'm with Outlaw-drive it:D

I know you guys dont like my views in regards to values. but ,I build these things for good people not **** heads gold chainers gay guys or what ever you people want to call them, I give them a fair deal and they enjoy the car as most of us do. It sounds like if i were to come to any of you guys place of business that you would do what ever you do free or cheap as you expect the car builders to do . I suspect not... face it cars with paint and interiors bring more money , that is why they need to be offered in a diff place than here. I know a lot of you guys can buy anything you want and do, I like that ,knowing you still like a traditional car as well as the muscle car and street rod and amg your wife drives. I know you guys are on here as well as johnny rustoleum.
I agree in the end, that your car is not far enough along to bring those dollars but dont give it away either because someone else wants ya to.......

  4. Here's my Deuce cents for ya:

Cost: The amount of cash or cash equivilance needed to produce an item.

Price: The agreed upon exchange of cash or cash equivalnce for goods or services rendered.

Value: What a typical buyer would pay, in cash or cash equivalance, in an open market in an arm's length transaction.

I'm a real estate appraiser and I see it all the time. Folks think money spent equals value and it doesn't. I tell them that I can put a $5,000 paint job on my '98 Toyota but it's still a $3000 car when I'm done.

Ebay it and hope someone bites. Then take that cash, build something else and ebay that. You'll be richer than 3W Larry in no time...

Wow, I didn't think I would bring so much controversy with this post. I realize that a guy never gets his labor out of a car, but if you can't get enough out of the car to replace the parts (without hanging at every swap meet for the next 10 years hoping for deals (dreamers) on good stuff then it becomes a pretty damned expensive hobby. The original price I was looking for was steep (since lowered...if ya wanna know, ya gotta ask) but I was hoping to ride the rat rod rage and maybe make a few bucks toward my Deuce/A coupe hiboy. It would be nice to build a car with enough ching in the pocket to at least pay for the parts, but it was probably more dream than real expectation.
I have a feeling most of you guys figure you could build that car for a
WHOLE lot less. Maybe, but when was the last time you found an 8-inch ford diff with a new Auburn LS, new gears, new brakes, new bearings, seals, etc. at a swap meet? And the list goes on........
I'm not dissing anyone here, just trying to make some sense out of where this whole shebang deal.
Oh, and I do drive it......gravel, paved, rain, shine and even snow.

Damn, if you can't afford an expensive hobby, you've got the wrong hobby pal!!!

And incase you didn't notice, it's rare that anyone makes a profit on a car they've built unless you keep it for 20 years. How often have you seen fresh rods that the add says "$30k invested, will sell for $22k..."

  8. for sale car = initial cost of car + cost of parts - (labor x 1.50)

Geez, I get to lose my labor at only a buck-fifty an hour? Some of my projects have net me a much larger per hour loss. Oh well, time spent in the garage is sure more fun than time spent at work.
I went road racing this weekend, now that's a way to watch your money go away........fast.

  10. Rust? I guess I'm just old fashioned. That, to me, kinda falls into the 'culture not cars" file. More power to you if thats your thing, but appearance is 99.9 percent of almost everything in life. We spend a ton of money getting the thing running the way we want it, stopping the way we want it, handling the way we want it and then we fail to close the circle with a (few) hours of bodywork, prep and quality paint. I don't get it- but thats me.

I will grant you though that some cars nowadays probably look better all rusted out if it fits in with the "blacksmith shop" look.

Finshed cars might be all the rage, by the time you're done. I bet cars will be even more spendy at Barrett-Jackson, too...

WOW...so i guess since my car is painted its a "STREET ROD"..HAHAHAHA...what a loser...good luck getting anything over 12g's for your "RAT ROD"....*****!!

  13. i was actually think of it as a 1.5:1 ratio...

  14. How much is it worth? As much as the buyer is willing to spend.

Cars are a goofy market, if you want top dollar for something it takes time to get there. If you want to sell it and start a new project, take the first real cash offer that you're comfortable with. I grabbed a Willys to sell just for money to save more cars out of the same yard and I haven't even gotten an offer on it, just some ***hat from the other side of the pond wanting me to part it out for him even though you can buy fenders and stuff easy if you look a little. I don't need to get top dollar for it, I priced it in between the two book figures and the first offer will probably get it.

But nothing so far at all, which just amazes me. I hope it doesn't turn into another '50 Ford Woodie that takes two years and one ***hat jerking me around for 4 months before it really sells to someone.
