Hello everybody, My name is Oliver, I am 28 years old and I live in germany. I have got a Chevy half ton pickup from 1951 and do a full restauration. Unfortuneatly I can not find the right pinion seal for my differential, so I decided to ask there, where a lot of people with the right knowledge can read it. I made a few pictures of the differential, I am not really sure anymore, if it is a Chevy differential at all :-D Thank you Oliver
looks like the original rearend for truck. 1951 chevy rearend try here maybe https://www.chevsofthe40s.com/dept/Rear+Axle/cat/Bearings.html
original rearend was torque tube! but the housing could be the original? there's some interchangeability
I own an original '57 GMC 100, 1/2 ton pickup, that I modified. The original didn't have torque tube.
I think 54 was the last year of torque tubes. Also, a 57 GMC might have had a Dana 40 rear, not the Chevy rear that this fellow has.
Yes, I believe that rear is 55-59, to 63 as well(?). Note- The half ton truck rear is what Chevrolet used in the Black Widow for N.A.S.C.A.R. Grand National Division
pretty sure you'll find open drives in 55 first series trucks...look it up http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/
we actually hashed the open/closed driveline deal on the AD truck the other day. Up to '55 (sometimes late '54) the half ton trucks were factory closed driveline with the exception of the 3/4 ton. The 3/4 ton had 8 lug wheels and floating axles. I would be looking for later truck pieces. Like has been suggested.
I would look into Eaton axles. I don’t know what model you have but I know that GM trucks had Eaton axles up through 1972 I believe. I too was perplexed by the axle in my uncles 3/4 ton which turned out to be an Eaton HO52. It is similar to the axle in your pictures as it has the removable 3rd member/differential and a cover plate on the rear with 10 bolts. The HO52 is a full floater axle setup for heavier duty applications. I would do a search on the Eaton HO52 and look for any identification marks or stampings on the axle you have to narrow down your search. That’s the best info I have to offer you..
