What is the remedy for galling on the bearing surface of the outer axle housing on the ‘39 rear end? Can it be sleeved by a machine shop? Please see pic. Thx! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I had that happen on a 40 Ford rear end, a DesMoines repair shop ground it down and sleeved and it worked out fine. The sleeves may be hard to find. Sent from my SM-J727U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Been there. If you can't find a suitable replacement end in your area ... Hot Rod Works sells the repair sleeve. Not exactly cheap .... but with no alternative situations, they're a choice that can be had. https://www.hotrodworks.com/product/axle-housing-repair-sleeve/ EDIT for another >>> https://cgfordparts.com/ufolder/fordpart.php?number=B-4012 .... both are hardened steel sleeves.
some of the sleeves are not hardened correctly. john at columbia two speed is who makes the good ones the dealers sell. google em up
I brought a pair of repair sleeves for my '48 Ford years back. A place off of route 110 in Farmingdale that repairs cracks in diesel engines machined and pressed the sleeves of me. I just can't remember the name of the shop or exact address. A man named Johnny Stooksbury I believe lives in Tennessee also used to do them, don't have his number either.
I din't know how much difference the '39 is from Model A, but check out PN 1840 on the Bratton's, Model A, site, it has the measurements. You will need a machine shop to cut your housing and press the new race on.
I think I would contact some of the reputable dealers (VanPelt would be good if he offers this service) and see if they offer a service to install the sleeves. If one shop sells you the sleeves and installs them you know where to point the finger if there is a problem. I don't think I would want the average shop learning on my rear end. Charlie Stephens
