I picked up a 5 speed chevy tranny today. I want to put it in my coupe bolted to a 283 SBC. The stamping numbers are GM 8679097. Can anyone tell me what this is and are there and good/bad things I should know? I searched the numbers but it threw me everything from an 87 to a 2000. Hopefully it will make me a good 5 speed....

A picture is worth 10,000 words in this case.

  3. Yes, a pictire of the top. 1988-1990, had a ball bearing and a roller bearing behind it. Later designs only had a ball bearing but it was a much larger bearing. The first design bearings were more prone to fail.

I believe it to be a NV3500 transmission, common for both GM and Dodge. The trans case has an integrated bellhousing, obviously different between the GM and Dodge trans. The output shaft will be either 28 or 30 spline, 4th will be a 1:1 ratio with a .73:1 overdrive. It's a relatively light, relatively strong, fully sychronized transmission that really doesn't like powershifting. Try it with a 29" tire and a 3.42 gear.

Looks like my 92 S-10 Blazer trans.

That is out of a chevy truck all I can tell you of what I know about then is they are junk. They can't even stand up to a V6 my brother knows that first hand.

I'd have to believe that is exactly as hinklejd described above. A good trans for the road but not a racing trans.

  9. It looks like a late 80's S10, would have been behind a 4.3. It will be fine if you don't push it.

  10. Depends on the year.

Sure looks like the NV3500, and I'd agree with the S-10 or S-10 Blazer call...the full size pickups with that transmission have a more upright shifter. It also looks like it's set up for an external slave just below the starter. Later models had an integrated slave/throwout bearing.

Late '80s would be a T5 - that's not a T5 and looks to be a later trans out of 94/95-up, if it's out of an S10 anyway.

I have One My Self I Plan on using. Exact Trans. I took it out of a 1994 Chevy Work Truck It was behind a 350. They may have put em in S10 s Too ! I'm Running mine behind a Built 396. I don't Run it hard but I run a Good Synthetic Gear oil in it. And have had Not One bit of Problems. Good Luck Anything Mechanical Will Break and Wear out We all Know that !
