Here's a link to a news story about an idiot arrested for driving 147 mph on the freeway in Scottsdale, AZ. He was photographed not once, but 4 times at over 100 mph. Now there are some dumb people out there but this is both crazy AND stupid. I know we'll get some debate about if photo radar speeding tickets is acceptable, but it it helps get idiots like this off the road, let's use it.

    http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/index.php?sty=66898

To bring this thread around to traditional hot rods. They talk about if the car he was driving was safe to go 147. The cops commented that the tires weren't rated for that kind of speed.

Is your car safe to drive fast? Is your traditional hot rod safe to drive? Are your tires rated for the load of your car? Have you checked to make sure the nuts and bolts are tight? Are all the cotter pins in place and bent correctly? What else should you be checking to make sure it doesn't come loose at speed on the freeway?

Stay safe kids and watch your rearview mirror for the idiots.

  2. You're getting old man.
    And so am I.

I used to push closer to 200 a lot. I damn sure didn't think about it either though. As we get older we start thinking about all the shit that can go wrong and that's what prevents us from doing the stupid shit we did as kids.

    Thanks for the warning.
I guess I'll be using the cruise control a lot in December on our vacation.

    Fucking government...

What are the speed limits on the 101, 10, and 60 there now anyway?
    Are they still 55 mph?

Is there a minimum speed limit like in NM?
I think I'll set the cruise for 1 mph over the minimum and drive in the #1 lane... Just like all the snowbirds usta do a decade ago

Speed limits are 65 on all of 'em... 75 on the 10 until you get into town...

The cameras were set up for a month on "trials" where it was explicitly stated that only warnings would be issued... some people decided to play with it and there were a number of 120mph+ "warnings" issued... now they're trying to get those people with reckless endangerment or something like that...

What's really fucking scary around here is that in addition to the SEVEN (not six, as in the article) freeway cameras, we have photo radar vans in Scottsdale and Mesa that are constantly moving around, red light AND speed cameras at a number of intersections in Scottsdale, Mesa, Chandler and probably more I don't know about, PLUS I have seen people pulled over with the following, COMPLETELY unmarked (the Impala even had a GB Packers license plate frame):

Black Dodge Intrepid with chrome wheels
    Maroon Monte Carlo
    Forest Green Monte Carlo
    Silver Mustang
    White Full-size Chevy Pickup
    Silver Impala
    Gold Toyota Tacoma

I think I hear George Orwell calling...

  17. his tickets were only 200 dollars each? Shit I got a ticket on the 285 loop around atlanta for 22 over the speed limit and it was 368 dollars. If I had been doing 147 I hate to think what it would have been.

How in the hell did he get a hyundia sonata to go 147 mph???

    Photo tickets are bullshit.

I heard about that.......wasn't there another bike behind him going around 140mph...........Hot rod magazine said they were trying to get in contact with him for an interview in one issues....then never heard anything else over it.......

  19. this is just the first step of to much government. all cars will have GPS and printed tickets will come out of the dash board computers and the fines will be automatic withdrawals out of your ATM?
and the only fun we'll have is reruns of the dukes of hazzard

In 1959 I had a first year Triumph Bonneville that only had two throttle positions ON and OFF had a cop claim to have clocked me (back then a cop had to clock you for 1/4 mile) at 57 in a 25. I looked him right in the eye and called him "a lieing sack of shit" I made my 1-2 shift at 45 mph and my 2-3 shift at 70 in the first block, and was over 100 in the second block (a school zone) he saw me fly by whatever side street he was on and knew I was over the 25 we argued back and forth (try that now days) and he couldn't tell me what 1/4 he clocked me in and ended up giving me a warning.
I only had two tickets on that bike. of course I never took the time to stop and talk every time there were Red Lights flashing behind or I might have had several more.
I've only had one photo radar ticket and I sent it in and said that it wasn't me driving that red blazer with flames and I didn't know who it might have been. never heard back and it wasn't on my DMV record

there was a kid here in North Dakota that got busted for 174 on a crotch rocket.

Ariel Timing from a plane and a stop watch is HUGELY fucked up at speeds over 90mph.

a fraction of a second is many MPH diferance. and your at the mercy of the reaction time of the cop. WHo you know will run with the fastest speed he sees.

C'mon guys. We can debate the issues with speed cameras all day long, and I would venture a guess that most of us agree that they're shitty. But let's keep this in perspective. 147 MPH on a public road where the speed limit is 65 and the traffic is maybe doing 80 is ridiculous. If it was a completely empty road and the retard was endangering only himself, that's one thing. I find it hard to believe that the loop road around Phoenix is ever empty, so this guy was clearly endangering not only himself but others. Whether or not you're anti-government and regardless of how you feel about cops or speed traps or speeding tickets, we all enter a tacit contract when we decide to live in civilized society: we agree to occasionally forgo our selfish desires for the greater good of everyone. One fool driving at 147 while everyone else is doing 80 is breaking that contract, and I have no sympathy for his arrest and hopefully his future loss of license. Most people do not have the raw ability or the genuine presence of mind to control any car (old or late-model) at that kind of speed. Given how easy it is to get a driver's license in the US, most people are barely capable of maneuvering a car at legal speeds, as is evidenced by the retards I encounter virtually everyday on my drive to and from work (I'm sure most of us on here aren't those retards, since care about cars more and thus tend to have a greater understanding of their abilities).

Basically, I couldn't give a rat's ass if you want to live dangerously or kill yourself. Just don't take me out because you're being an asshole.

If you want to see the future of this style of "enforcement" check out this Car & Driver article: http://www.caranddriver.com/columns/11040/the-asl-button-push-it-and-let-big-brother-drive.html

You can thank the Dutchman Maurice "Maus" Gatsonides (1911-1998) for pioneering this technology.

Maus was a racecar driver who also built a couple of Specials.
He won the rally of Monte Carlo in '53, some say by cheating.
He had helpers along the route that would throw water on his overheated drum brakes, eventhough outside help was not allowed...

  27. I gotta agree with you 100%... Use of public roadways is a right that like all others must be tempered with obeyance of the laws. Now don't get me wrong, I'm no Polly Anna when it comes to speed limits on the highway. I think 80 is a reasonable limit in open country. I don't care how good a driver you are, shit happens in a real hurry at anything over 125 MPH especially with the derth of cell phone yakking loud stereo pounding latte drinking vitam B12 deficient soccer mom zombies behind the wheel these days...

Even if the radar indication is wrong and he was doing 125 it's still excessive. But - If the radar is wrong he should not be cited due to lack of the state proving their case.

At any rate, you think the rental agencies would have put some kind of governor on their cars. And I do think a Hyundai Sonota could do 147  but thats gotta be absolutely maxed out or falling out of the sky...

anyone who thinks its ok that the is government giving people citations based on what a camera saw is missing the big picture here. today its speeding/red light tickets, in the near future its going to be incorrect hand placement on the steering wheel. if you give the government the ability to take an inch of your freedom they will take it all. it is this "the government knows whats best for me to keep me safe" mentality that is destroying everything this country once stood for, and if you believe in it you are part of the problem. a recent study in florida showed that after intersections with cameras proved profitable the city cut the yellow light time in half in those intersections to make them even more profitable. the government doesnt draw the line, we do.
