Ok so the peak job on my car that the original owner did was cracked and there was a hole where the emblem had been. All they did was slap some bondo in the hole and all the way up the groove, sand it down and paint over it. They did the same with the headlights, so I redid those too.
So this and the headlights are the first body-mods I have ever done so go easy...! I used a 1/4" steel rod, bent it too shape, used about a million tack welds to get it into place while using my air hose to cool down each weld so as not to cause any warpage. Just gotta do the top peace and it'll be all done.

Nice work! Are you going to try to lead it as well? Looks like there's not much need for filler....:D

that looks really well done. really good for your first time

  4. Kool, did you use 1/4" rod the entire length of the hood, or just in the front? I'm planning on doing the hood on my '54 this spring, and I've noticed that the hood has a factory "peak" in the front below where the bird was. I'd thought about using 1/4" from the rear and maybe 1/8" down the front. Just wondering how you're going about it. Looks good. What are you using for headlight bezels?

I havent done the flat section yet, I think I will just fade the rod away. For the headlights I used 52-54 merc lights.

    Hey mikey,

Your hood peak looks killer for a first shot at it! Maybe this shot will instill
some other virgins to give it a go?

If ya decide to lead that seam, and you're a little worried 'bout warping the
snot out of the flat, low crowned areas of the hood, a large soldering iron will
work. Yeah, it will take ya longer than a torch, but with less heat area involv-
ed the likely hood of warpage will be lessened. For small areas that need to
be filled, give it a try.

The original bondo peak on mine was cracked all the way from the bottom to the top and the holes where the bondo was fell through so thats what made me weld it up.

    Looks good!
Weld the seam flanges together on the underside too so it can't flex and "Hinge" on you any more.
    I wouldn't lead that.
Lead is highly over rated and not as "good" as a quality body filler.
Yes, I have leaded a '53 Chevy hood, when I was thirteen.
Been there, can't remember where the tools are to do that, haven't had any desire to do it again.

  15. I'm VERY impressed! Certainly gives me some ideas.-------------LEE!
