VERY cool Hot Rod documentary…

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by DocWatson, Jun 3, 2006.

  1. I just got hole of the coolest hot rod documentary, it was made by Dean Moon and narrated by Alex Xydias. Called, “The Hot Rod Story” and made in 1963 it includes……..

Opening scenes are of the CT Strokers FED running at Lyons Drag strip with real early ‘race cam’. Follows the story of early hot rod pioneers and dry lake racing. Talks about the forming of SCTA.
Has names like Ed Iskanderian, Vic Edelbrock, Stuart Hilborn , the Chrisman Bros, Yakel Bros, Alex Xydias himself, Afrons and more.
This is accompanied by footage of all the biggest names and there cars running including brilliant footage of Mickey Ts Challenger 1 taking the worlds speed record from john Cobb. Period footage of cars running across the salt and behind the scenes in the pits.
It goes on to cover the evolution of dragracing. Lots of film from the first NHRA nationals with the Bustle Bomb, Art Chrisman’s first dragster, Afrons first ‘Green Monster’, Don Garlits Swamp Rat 1 the Bean Bandits first cars, Kalittas Head Hunter, the freight Train, Tommy Ivo, Prudome with a ‘quick’ 8.02 Et in his fuller.
It finishes with the 63 Nationals and the ‘New for this year’ Christmas tree start lights!!
Film of Kalitta helping Garlits fix his car between runs the Ramchargers, color me gone, lawman……….
    This film is awesome!
If anyone has the gear to put this on DVD I would like to get this done as its on VHS and I don’t want this to get wrecked. Who knows, if this is unavaliable maybe I could get this out to you guys for the cost of a disc and postage??
    Cheers,
    Doc.

I have a copy of it and besides the cars, really dig the music and humor.

  6. One of my dads early Lakes/Bonneville cars is mentioned/shown in that video.
Something to the effect of "And whats this contraption of Gary Cagles?,,,a spaceship?",,,or something like that.

I'll have to watch it again,& it really is worth having.

  15. When Cobb took the record at 394mph, he ran a one way top of 403mph as you know its the average of both ways. This makes me wonder why the old Bonneville sign "Worlds fastest raceway" listed his one way best rather than the record??
I LOVE dry lake racing! Debating if I should sell off the gasser project and build something to run on the salt?? Hmmmm
