When you transfer the art through the pounce wheel holes with tal*** powder or chalk, doesn't this prevent the paint from adhering to the surface? Like spraying paint over dust? I gotta be missing something. I am watching this thread and I just ordered some brushes and 1shot. I have to be crazy to start something new at 59 yrs old!

The stabillo is a pencil with a water removable lead not really chalk for China marking. There is also a brand of similar ones from Germany called Staedler? I use these too. Also there is a pattern transfer paper called Saral transfer paper. This stuff is awesome and I discovered it and have used it for about 8 years. I mostly use it for lettering but works for cartoons, or striping designs too although I always freehand the striping around a center line but only when necessary. The Saral is like a colored chalk carbon sheet. Comes in several colors for contrast . All ya do is draw your creation on paper and tape it across the top . Then position it where you want it and place the Saral under the paper design and trace over the detail and outline with a pen or pencil. Instant layout [emoji41] I’m in San Dimas Ca and have been striping , lettering and airbrushing since ‘73. If you ever have Any other questions you can call me Larry Fator at 909 592-4841

Unfortunately, Airbrush Action magazine has ceased publication but as you can see there is a ton of info available from other sources.
I used to paint signs and pinstripe before I became an airbrush artist, and practice, practice, and more practice is the key...Good Luck!

Never too old! What are you planning to practice on? I've been using gl*** out of dollar store picture frames. I am still waiting to see if I can get anything from the body shop. I s****e them off with a razor blade.

Where would be a good place to post on here if I'm looking for feedback? I did this today. 52743153_765760310470732_3523388451476996096_n.jpg

I'm not sure if there is a striping social group on here, but you could always start one if there isn't.

I recall it was a white pencil. But not sure the brand. It was not waxy though. I used the French liner more because I like my brush more upright like a pencil. I still use it when I paint.

One thing you need to have is confidence if you don’t make your strikes with conviction then you will be able to see it in the art. Even bad strokes look good when you do it with conviction.

Was it a stabillo pencil? I just got one in the mail today. I am not having great luck with lettering with sword brushes so maybe a french liner would be better.

Anyone can post in the art show? This thread is definitely evolving. I was not expecting anywhere near this much help so I am pleasantly surprised!

However it shares the same rules as the Hamb regarding content...should be Hamb guidelined car culture related, No RatRods, StreetRods, Motorcycles...there is some lienency however I try to stick to what I know floats here....

    Larry I am currently using:
    mack

    blue striper 000

green 00 - Unfortunately I ruined this one. I was certain I had removed all the paint but I hadn't. I have brush oil now so I am hoping this doesn't happen again.

    custom shop

sword #00- Really like this one!

scroll #1- This one hasn't worked great for me. I have a hard time getting enough paint on it to pull longer lines. This may be user error though.

long liner #00- The long handle on this brush made it a little awkward for me as I use my pinky to steady my hand.

I am going to be able to buy more brushes and paint in a few weeks. What brushes should I buy? My lettering needs a lot of help. It is not going well!
    Thank you for your help!

Good luck! If you do get cheap picture frames I would recommend sticking with 8x10 or smaller. I broke another 11x14 today by leaning on it too much. That's two in the last week.

Got my first official paint project! This is being used as a parts car, and then I get to paint it in the spring. For our yard. My husband hates painting but has the spray guns we need for the primer/paint. I just got a Mercury Sable trunk lid and spoiler today. It’s pretty dirty but will be great for practice.

This car is in worse condition than it looks. Floors and rockers are really rotten, every piece of trim/chrome on it is dented/scratched/pitted, bottoms of the doors are rusty, frame behind rear axle has rust holes in it, engine is incomplete and is seized, trans is jammed in neutral, and there is almost no interior left.

Consider using window gl***, it is stronger (i.e. thicker). Maybe, with a little luck, the sizes you want might be free. Check out your local independent gl*** shop or hardware store.

We had a storm this weekend and my neighbor "air-mailed" his trampoline into my yard. It took out one pane of gl*** (approx 1 ft x 3 ft) in a storage shed. Ace Hardware (Sierra Vista, AZ) charged less than $6 for the gl*** and $20 for the installation.

Striping brushes are only for thin lines and are designed to hold a load of paint for long consistent thin lines . Lettering Quills are made for lettering . For outlining large letters you can use a striper or a outlining quill . Outliners have 1 1/4”-2” bristles wrapped on a round handle. They will also do scrollwork too.

Post it on the Kool Pinstriping thread, many designs there for you to study as well as getting some fresh ideas for you to practice.

I would drive that thing the way it sits, fix the mechanics and have a blast. Great patina.

Before you jump into the deep end of the pool, get a few books of imitation gold leaf and/or variegated leaf. True gold leaf is pretty spendy to practice with. With the imitation or variegated gold leaf you can use thinned lettering enamel as size as a cheaper alternative to real gold size.

Practice a little basic lettering, maybe 3" or 4" tall on a panel and wait for the lettering enamel to almost dry. Then let it dry a bit longer. Lay a sheet of leaf over the lettering and lightly blow or tamp it flat. Let things dry a bit longer and carefully brush off the loose areas of the leaf.

It won't be perfect by any means but it will start to give you a feel for the materials you're working with. Try different drying times and don't get in a rush. Imitation and variegated leaf are fragile materials. Real gold leaf is probably 10 times more so.

Here's some tutorials here that might help.

You had a question about the use of powder or charcoal thru the pounce pattern. After pouncing with the dust blow off the excess and if it is a large letter you can wipe away all but the outline with a cloth. For striping designs I prefer the chalk method l described earlier. Paint will stick to chalk or charcoal dust with no problem. Every painter has favorite brushes. My choice might be totally different from yours so don't be afraid to buy numerous styles and sizes until you find some to your liking. While you are st it order a box of stabillo pencils because the one you have won't last very long. For lettering Pict a couple of fonts that you like a practice them. You will find that alphabets are just like brushes, everyone has his favorites. Or in this case her favorites. Good luck

Try large used wine bottles or used large industrial light bulbs. Should be an electrician around somewhere who could supply you one or the other, maybe both?;)

    from so . cal.

why would anyone want to "practice" on a gl*** surface ? In the end you're going to be striping cars , not windows . Larry Fator has given you an excellent resource for quality information from a more than qualified professional , use it and don't pay any attention to anyone who hasn't been in the business for a while . Striping wine bottles and light bulbs is not the way to go . You might try contacting Bob Bond at Auto Art Magazine , he used to do a lot of beginner cl***es .

I started using the scroll brush I have for lettering and crossovers. It's a lot easier! I was making it hard for myself. Thank you!
