Is anyone familiar with any special inserts or washers that fit over the studs and under the lock washer andbolts when installing Evans heads?
You should always use hardened steel washers under the nuts on aluminum heads on a flathead. Most all of the early Ford vendors will have them. There are no special requirements for Evans heads.
I second the using of hardened steel washers with aluminum heads. They are readily available. At the risk if being redundant, here is a thread I posted on "The Ford Barn" about stabilizing heads on the block : https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=230469&highlight=tubing.
I found good hardened washers from ARP were best. Many hardened washers are case hardened. Hard for .010 or .015 on the surface. Soft underneath. Good for most things. But on an aluminum head they will cup and cause the aluminum to do the same. Get a good tool steel washer hardened clear through and that wil not happen
I had to make some for a Buddy , could not find any of the correct size . I made them from bar stock one at a time . No issue to date and that was 8 years ago .
ARP has a washer that steps down into the hole to keep the aluminum from collapsing into itself. I can't post a pic of them for some reason, they are made for aluminum cyl. heads and called 'step washers' or 'Insert washer' - google 'ARP 200-8550', I use them from 1/4 on thru 1/2"
Wow, good to know. Fist time putting aluminum heads on my 60hp with 3/8" studs I used hardware store washers. When that didn't pan out I got hardened washers that are doing fine but next time I will use these. Thanks!
A V8-60? Post up some pics of it, I think those motors are the coolest thing! I have one and keep thinking about getting it dressed up like 3/4midget motor as a stationary display.
AwJeez, I that don't look right at all, I must've wrote the number down wrong. I pulled a pack from my bench for 3/8ths, try ARP# 200-8572. That 2pack looks like regular headbolt washers, not the 'Insert Washer. Sorry about that. I can't find an angle image so you can see the 'step' that goes down into the bolt/stud hole.
Thank you to all responders!!! I learned a lot and will follow up with the ARP hardened chamfer washers.
