I need your help.... I am still trying to figure this out after all of these years. I had another hood hinge bolt come loose and pop out when driving. This is the 4th or 5th bolt that has done this. (the nuts are not stripped) I have the correct shoulder bolts, but I have never used a wire although I have heard it should come into play. I just can't find a link to how this works, but need to figure this out before I mess up my paint. I was originally told by a friend to use a cooper washer between the hood mount and hinge, but don't over tighten the bolts; however, this causes the bolt to be loose and the threads end up getting stripped and over time the bolt comes loose and falls out...not good.... I also see the use of wave washer in some articles, but I can't see how they are used. Can someone please provide a link or some instructions on what to do to avoid this from continuing? Thank you...

If you have the similar CD that Dan has available to members (pictured below) the hood and it's related parts should be in the Parts Illustration section, the wave washer is correct to use with that bolt. 1firewall.JPG

This shows the bolts and wave washers,I've owned four '53 Fords and three '54 Fords and I cannot remember any having the safety wire running through the bolts, have you applied any Loc***e to the threads ? 1firewall.JPG

Thanks Jeff... I'll order the wave washers and try some loc***e and see if that will hold it.

I believe I see how that works. If you tie a wire together between the 2 bolts, and one of the bolt starts to turn out, the wire will bind up and not let the bolt turn further. It that the gist of it? Thanks for your input...

It looks like they are drilled for safety wire, but not in the traditional sense as I know it. Harbor Fright may have the pliers, not sure about the wire but that is easy to find, I'd use .032" safety wire. At work we safety wire lots of things.

I've had the hood off my 54, used the shoulder bolts without the wire. May have used loc***e but not sure. No problem with the bolts loosening.
