I want to paint some small stuff: headlight buckets, etc. Would like to shoot them in lacquer that I can rub out. Does it come in rattle cans? Who makes it? Thanks.
it does indeed; Duplicolor makes a pretty good black. rubs out A-OK. I used some for touchup on my old R60/2 conversion. speaking of which, who/where/what on quarts of black lacquer? have another bike project that's screaming for B.L.- where to find in Texas? is it outlawed here?
Try the local ACE hardware, they have carried it in the past and it worked great, and was pretty cheap.
I painted a bike frame with the black laquer from Duplicolor a couple years ago. Came out looking great...never rubbed or sanded it, either!
Dan , I can still get laquer by the quart at the ppg store here in town. If you can't find it holler ,I'll mail it. TP
thanks, guys. TP, I may take you up on that offer if it's convenient. a quart should go a pretty long way through an HVLP gun. I love black lacquer....even I can get a sharp finish with it!
how about brushing it on a car? ***uming i'm not gonna be entering it into a beauty contest......could you wet sand it a bit and rub it out to a decent finish? i don't have a paint gun yet so i'm just thinking.....
Brush application of lacquer was the accepted method before spray guns were common. FoMoCo used a dip-and-drain method of body painting into the '30s. Brush-painted, high-end lacquer jobs were color-sanded and then buffed, just like later times when the lacquer was applied with a spray gun.
Could anyone tell me where I could get some of the old style Ditzler double deep black lacquer, (not acrylic) or the Ditzler black acrylic lacquer that was produced in the 70's through current time. Can't find any here. I painted one of my cars with the straight lacquer in 1974, and it is in need of some refinishing now. Thanks for any and all help.....SSE
The car quest i deal with at work sells plisti-kote lacquer in spray cans. I think auto zone sells the same brand. Good stuff as far as rattle cans go.
I'd use a "fine" textured roller instead of a brush. the texture will be more even, and if it doesn't get completely sanded out, it will look like regular orange peel.
just look at the auto parts stores paints sections..i wanna say advance auto, pepboys and autozone should have it...it's in a black spray can with a picture of i think a model T on it..hope that helps creepy
i can get black lacquer in dupont and ppg in gallons any color in the ppg black only in the dupont... anyone needs any holler...
Hey, In the pages of Hemmings Antique Motor News you'll find guys still sellin nitro and acrylic lacquer, Under the name "Hyperia" bad sp. Look under the restoration suppiles etc. Watch your *** sendin paint through the mail today.... since 9/11 the postal service has got no sence of humor, when it comes ta sendin anything that could go boom, unintended or other wise, through the mail. If they intercept it, ya can count on big money fines or cage time. Ya can roll lacquer with a foam roller and hi-temp thinner or add some retarder to it. Let it dry for 2-3 days to a week, than colour-sand it with 600 wet & dry wheel and polish with cornstarch.
D, Duplicolor like everyone esle says......you can get some at the Kragen on 41st avenue right by my place. Nick
