The future of Drag Racing will be a 1/4 mile or 1/8 mile two lane stretch of black top in some remote area away from civilization. It will be on a piece of property that is considered worthless to any developer. One or two people (owners) will put up the money to build the strip. The track will be fenced in and there will be no bleachers for spectators. To race there, you will need a membership, just like your local gun club or private golf co****. With your membership you would relinquish liability. All the small tracks are gone in this area due to financial loss, public distane or liability issues. Sign me up, I am ready to become a member. p.s. I need to renew, my track stickers are up next month.
Our track is going away Some one with a lot of money moved in not too far from the track and put up a big stink. The last I heard was next year was the last, we'll see.
All forms of auto racing are pretty much dead. If you really want to reinvigorate drag racing ad a jump or a lane cross over at mid track like those old Tyco slot car tracks.
I went to the California hot rod reunion for the last time last year, and the future of drag racing is that ***** with the siren in the kids wagon at the finish line, and of course all the lard-***'s with the golf carts.
I hear there's an underground movement where guys are building traditional styled drag cars from the 50's and 60's and racing them without caring about who wins..............it may just be a rumor though.
I heard about that too, but I lost interest when I found out they weren't allowing any cars with big-block or small-block Chevy engines. Dave Mann (602) 233-8400 weekdays http://www.roadsters.com/
I've always talked of doing this if you had some acreage. But there would probably be someone, somewhere that would know you're having too much fun and find a way to stop it. Doc
More bad news... Rumor has it (ONLY a rumor) that the repave job at Famoso isn't up to spec. Anybody want to guess when it'll get re-redone? BUMMER if it's true...
****. we lost one of the oldest drag strips on the east coast last year, we're losing another at the end of this year, then another at the end of next year.
See the Minnesota Dragways ( south of Twin Cities ) web page. Pine Run track ( Pine City Area ) went down the dumper lastwinter due to enviremental issues. CBIR goes on but with all of the devolment in the Brainerd Lakes Area how long CBIR will be there ??
This is just an observation of mine, and not meant to be smart-***, but I never understood why drag race tracks never bought into the multi-use market. Ever wonder why they look so bad. Lot's of people won't go to a drag strip, because they are so depressing to look at. For example Famoso probably pulls in millions. Where does it go? Not into the track. What a piece of **** facility. If I was running a track, I'd put it at a place where I could sell hanger space to engine builders, rodders, hell even Wal-Mart. $10 for a hot dog and a beer? Give me a break. Drag race tracks are owned by people who don't want to make money. They're waiting for the right real-estate money, and then ****, they are gone.
You've got that right.....I'd love to sit and watch some of the races but there is no shade at all. How much would it cost to put up some sort of an overhang to shade the crowd.
People have held out the carrot for a dragstrip in the twin cities for along time. I don't believe it will happen until someone with really deep pockets can step up and fund it. In this state if you have enough money to do it on your own,you can get the state to pick up the tab. Oh yeah, that is if its a stick & ball sport! Wish I could get the state to subsidize my business. Doc
My 2 cebts: Professional drag racing will be 4 owners (Kalitta, Shuemacher, etc.). Each owner will have 4 cars in each of the 4 cl***es. They will tour the country putting on exhibitions which they will claim are races, and charge only a hundred bucks to let you watch. In the 6 years I've gone to Goodguys races, the Top Fuel guys have gone from little box trailers behind pickups to full towing rigs. I guess you can't ever hold the line on cost. Someone can always outspend you. Even with all the complaining, there still is 3 strips within 150 miles of my MInnesota home. Not great, but not bad either.
Eventually, everything returns to where it began. Drag racing is no different. When they close the small tracks cars will find a place to race on the street. A strech of highway with two lines painted on it and a guy with a flag in his hand. It will be american grafitti all over again. It all just rock and roll and root beer anyway. No more pits..well be back in parking lots uncapping the the headers and bolting on the slicks. Three yards MF and we got us an automobile race. Oh how I miss the old days.....................
I have seen a video of a drag strip in the middle east somewhere it makes our tracks look like some cubscouts built it. someone needs to build a modern track with some kind of sound control around it. I am not talking put mufflers on cars although with how advanced mufflers are it wont neccesarily reduce speed but who want to hear a muffled blown hemi?
Anyone on here check this site out before?....http://www.armageddontopfuel.com/ Similar concept to your "underground slingshot races" info, but this guy's ideas are way out there. Cool site and awesome cars. The intro is interesting but long winded and the site kind of jumps around, but if you click on everything you eventually will see it all....
Bunch of suburban s*** that moved in next to KCIR, then decided it was loud are going to kill our small track. But the NASCAR monster across town sprouted up mcmansions and furniture stores. All tax free BTW. The France family gets all the revenue, residents all the burden. Go figure

IMHO, drag racing is NOT dead. Many tracks in FL and GA are great. This is ME on the starting line learning how to drive a nitro nostalgia flopper at the Silver Dollar raceway in GA. I live in FL, the flopper is in GA. I'm the first lady this year to drive one of these babies.
Drag racing is not dead...but it has a very unhealth cough and a nasty looking growth just under the skin, that could be malignate. I have lived where there was no strip. There had been one about 15 years earlier but it died and everyone started racing on country roads. A group of us went to the City Council and got permission (and a contract) to use an auxilary landing strip on Sundays...and about 3 years later we had a drag strip with a real tree. Last year it dried up again and closed...but someone steped in this year and put a little $$$ into it. Thats where the small town drags strips are at...struggling to keep things open. Instead of watching Nascar on Sundays we all need to go out to the local drag strip and buy a bunch of $10 hot dogs. Race mama's car in street stock and tell all your friends its a happening place.
The future of drag racing can't be dead with a WONDERFUL show like PINKS on the air....... Its such a great show, with all the drama, and negotiations Exactly what true drag racing is all about
